Starfires' season ends

FORT WAYNE — Two Starfires ran well enough at the Wayne sectional to advance to regional action. They weren’t able to take the next step.
The South Adams High School boys track team’s season came to an end Thursday at the regional meet hosted by Wayne.
Junior Evan Liechty had the top finish for the Starfires, leading them to a four-point total and a tie for 29th place out of 37 scoring teams. Eleventh-ranked Snider knocked off No. 10 Carroll to win the regional championship with 67.5 points.
Liechty turned in a seventh-place finish with a time of 4 minutes, 38.84 seconds, in the 1,600-meter run. The top three athletes in each event advanced to the state finals.
Joel Schmidt was eighth in the 110 hurdles in 16.42 seconds.
Isaac Werst, Andrew Steffen, Tim Lehman and Logan Steiner were eighth in the 4x800 relay in 8:30.49. Dom Richert, Cole Farlow, Schmidt and Lehman posted a time of 3:34.65 for ninth in the 4x400 relay.

Jay golfers dominate
The Jay County boys golf team rolled to an easy victory Thursday, topping the visiting Adams Central Flying Jets 177-218 at Portland Golf Club.
Evan Mathias parred the 348-yard, par-4 10th hole at PGC to open his round, and added pars on the 354-yard, par-4 16th and the 344-yard, par-4 17th. He finished with a 43 to earn medalist honors
The top score for Adams Central was a 46 from Blake Pfeiffer.
Justen Keller also had three pars as he and Richie Carducci each posted scores of 44 for the Patriots. Adam Alfont completed the team score with a 46, and Dylan Friddle shot 44.
Mitchel Rigby led the JCHS junior varsity team to a score of 195 with a 47.

Brewster paces
Rieley Brewster drove in three runs Thursday for Brewster Electric, which scored four times in the fourth inning and held on for an 8-7 victory over First Merchants Bank in Portland Junior League Rookie softball.
Brewster had two RBIs in the fourth inning and finished 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and three RBIs.  Lydia Kiehn and Emma Swingley each had three hits and two runs.
Tricia Ison had two hits, including a triple, two runs and an RBI for First Merchants.
Aubrie Schwieterman led Jay County REMC to a 17-10 victory over Portland Optimist with three hits, including two doubles, seven RBIs and two runs.
Maebry Ninde finished with five RBIs for Optimist.[[In-content Ad]]
