Starfires shut out Union City

BERNE — There was never any doubt.
The South Adams High School boys tennis team easily picked up its seventh win Wednesday, taking every match in shutout fashion in a 5-0 victory over the visiting Union City Indians.
The Starfires, who are 7-2, got 6-0, 6-0 singles wins from Alex Huber over Ben Van Camp at No. 1, Scott Hoeppner over Tyler Gundlach at No. 2 and Mark Muselman over Chris Landin at No. 3.
Ian Frank and Derek Schwartz earned a victory by the same score of Derrick Gasland and Luciana Banda at No. 1 doubles.
J.D. Tarr and Jonathan Steffen picked up the No. 2 doubles win by forfeit.

McEvoy honored
Brian McEvoy of Jay County was selected this week as the 2011 Ball State Alumnus Girls Track Coach of the Year.
The award is based on votes from other BSU graduates who coach girls track.

McEvoy, who also coaches cross country and teaches English at JCHS, led the Patriots to their second straight sectional championship in May. His team won the championship at Muncie Southside, scoring 66 more points than runner-up Muncie Central.
In addition to the two sectional championships in girls track, McEvoy has coached the Jay County girls cross country team to five straight sectional titles and three consecutive regional crowns.

SA 2nd, Chiefs 3rd
OSSIAN — South Adams scored 44 points to finish as the runner-up Wednesday in middle school girls cross country at the Norwell Invitational. Maple Creek (28) won the nine-team event, followed by the Starfires and East Jay (94).
South Adams was seventh in the boys race with 164 points, and East Jay (200) followed in eighth.
Olivia VonGunten turned in the top time for the area girls, leading South Adams with a third-place finish in 12 minutes, 32 seconds. Kara Seffernick was fifth in 12:37, and Hannah Coates placed ninth in 12:54.
Megan Wellman was the lone runner in the top 10 for East Jay, crossing the finish line in 12:45 for seventh place.
Ryan Ford was 10th for the South Adams boys in 11:27, and Michael Denney led the East Jay boys in 24th in 12:29.[[In-content Ad]]
