Starfires split with Celina (01/07/2009)

BERNE - A night after splitting with the Patriots, Celina's swim teams did the same with the Starfires.

South Adams High School's boys won each of the final three events Tuesday in order to pick up a 99-86 win over the visiting Bulldogs. The SAHS girls team dropped the deciding 400-yard freestyle relay in a 94-91 defeat.

Celina's girls defeated Jay County Monday while the boys team lost to the host Patriots.

The Starfire boys won the on power of Justin Klopp, Alex Habegger and Caleb Wurster, who joined Eric Feeney in winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3-minutes, 46.17 seconds and teamed with Cole Farlow to take the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.49.

All three won a pair of individual events, with Klopp first in the 100 butterfly in 55.6 and the 100 backstroke at 58.79.

Habegger finished first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.76 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.12, and Wurster took first in the 100 and 200 freestyle with times of 55.99 and 2:01.72 respectively.

Erika Waugh was the lone double winner for the SAHS girls, earning victories in the 500 freestyle in 5:50.46 and the 100 backstroke in 1:06.1.

Winning single events were Eric Feeney (500 freestyle - 5:32.96) for the boys and Jessica Sharp (200 individual medley - 2:29.64) and Taylor Turner (diving - 172.6 points) for the girls.

Tribe boys win two

UNION CITY - One group of Indians dominated early. The other dominated late. Both earned victories.

Fort Recovery Middle School's boys basketball teams crossed the state line Tuesday with the eighth graders beating Union City Westside 38-25 and the seventh grade team winning 36-21.

Chad Schroer scored 16 points for the eighth grade Indians (2-2), who outscoring Westside 13-2 in each of the first two quarters. Trent Kaiser added 10 points, and Logan Jutte scored six.

Fort Recovery's seventh grade Indians had a 25-11 scoring advantage in the second half, including 14-4 in the final period. Elijah Kahlig led the effort with 14 points, Bobby Mattraw scored eighth and Ben Dilworth had six.

Two from Judan win

FISHERS - A pair of athletes who train at Portland's Judan Judo finished first Dec. 27 at the Fishers YMCA Invitational.

Chiann Cupples and Abby Muhlenkamp each finished in first place. Ben Muhlenkamp added a third-place effort, and Cupples also picked up the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award.
