Starfires, Squaws split
South Adams roundup
BERNE — After shutting out the Squaws 7-0 in the first game, the South Adams softball team had a chance for the sweep.
The Starfires couldn’t pull through, losing in game two to Bellmont, 9-8 in 10 innings.
Bellmont scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning in game two to take a 5-4 lead, but the Stars (5-8) forced extra innings by tying the score in the home half of the frame.
Both teams scored three runs in the eighth and went scoreless in the ninth before Bellmont plated the game-winning run in the top of the 10th.
Alyssa Bluhm had five hits, including a double, to lead the Starfires. Two of Alaina Johnston’s three hits were doubles, and Lauren Smith also added three singles.
Maddie Morgan, Katelyn Augsburger, Brandi Rogers and Olivia Turner each added a pair of hits.
Augsburger was the pitcher of record for both games. She gave up six unearned runs in the second game on six hits to take the loss and surrendered six hits in the complete game shutout victory in game one.
SA 1-1 at invite
BERNE — After dropping the first game 3-2 to the Blackhawk Christian Braves in an invitational it hosted Saturday, the South Adams baseball team rallied to win a shootout against the Central Noble Cougars, 17-16.
After the Cougars pounced for eight runs in the top of the first inning, the Starfires tied the game with five runs in the first and three in the second. South Adams had a 12-10 lead after four, but Central Noble scored five in the fifth to take a three-run lead.
With the game tied at 15 heading into the seventh, the Cougars scored a run in the top half of the frame and could not hold the Starfires at bay, as they scored two runs to earn the walk-off victory.
Collin Affolder led the way for the Starfires with five hits, including a triple, driving in five runs and swiping three bases. Chandler Ingle and Jared Rife also got in on the action, with three hits and three RBIs each.
Derek Wanner and Skylar Schoch added two hits each.
Eric Pimentel started on the mound for South Adams and took the loss in game one, and he pitched in relief to earn the win in the second game.
Stars blanked by Eagles
BERNE — Hits were plenty over the weekend for the South Adams baseball team.
It managed just two on Monday against Churubusco.
The Eagles had five extra base hits and used a six-run fourth inning to shut out the host Starfires, 10-0.
Skylar Schoch and Collin Affolder managed the only hits for the Starfires.
