Starfires stumble vs. Marion (09/28/07)

Local roundup

BERNE - The Starfires struck first Thursday, but could not hold on.

South Adams lost 2-1 to the sectional rival Marion Giants, a team they could play again only if both teams reached the sectional championship game.

Maddie Moore put the Starfires (10-4) on the board first when she scored off a pass from Kinsey Lengerich. But the lead lasted only eight minutes as Maddie Kuczora of the Giants found the back of the net to tie the score with 25 minutes still remaining on the first-half clock.

Ashton Morgan had a penalty kick bang off the crossbar and no good later in the first half, and Marion made the most of its opportunities in the second. Taking just two shots after the break, Rachel Conrad converted one and the Giant defense halted five SAHS shots in the final six minutes of play.

Lions edge Jay

Jay County's boys soccer team closes its season with a double dose of Lions. It hopes the second goes better than the first.

The Patriots, who close their season with a trip to Marion Monday to play the Lakeview Christian Lions, lost 2-1 Thursday in their home finale against the Liberty Christian Lions.

Jay County (6-5-4) had a brief lead over the team from Anderson when Patrick Johnson scored with about 10 minutes left in the opening half. However, the Lions responded to tie the game five minutes later, then scored the game-winning goal with 15 minutes remaining in the game.

Liberty Christian out-shot the Patriots 9-8 for the game. Johnson converted on his only attempt for JCHS, and Justen Moser, Brad Horn and Chase Ainsworth each added two shots on goal.

Kevin Dirksen finished with a pair of saves.

Flying Jets top SA

MONROE - The South Adams volleyball team lost 25-12, 25-14, 25-14 Thursday to the Adams Central Flying Jets.

Hali Feaster led the Starfires in both digs (eight) and kills (four) in the defeat. Karen Bollenbacher added three kills and two blocks.

SAHS also dropped the junior varsity match, 25-7, 25-11.

Prescott awarded

ANDERSON - Jay County native Rodney Prescott was named Jockey of the Week Sept. 22 at Hoosier Park.

Prescott picked up seven wins for the week, earning two in one day on three different occasions. He led Hoosier Park in victories in 2005, and currently sits third in the 2007 standings with 17 victories.

EJ clobbers Montpelier

Amber Huelskamp and Austin Bentz each won their races Thursday evening as the East Jay Middle School cross country teams scored three wins over Montpelier.

Huelskamp led the Chief girls to a perfect 15-50 while the seventh grade boys won 22-35. Bentz's first-place finish came for the eighth grade boys, who scored 17 points while Montpelier did not have enough runners for a team score.

Huelskamp blew away the field in the girls race, finishing more than 45 seconds ahead of the rest of the runners in 12-minutes, 38 seconds. Katie Simmons was second in 13:25 as the Chiefs swept the top five, followed by LeAnn Horn (13:34), Tiffany Huelskamp (13:35) and Abigail Johnson (14:02).

Bentz led a one-two-three finish for the EJMS eighth grade boys in 11:24 with Bradley Leuthold just five seconds behind as the runner-up. Ed Muhlenkamp placed third in 12:32 with Jordan McBride (12:45) in fifth and Aaron Loy (12:46) in sixth.

Montpelier took the top spot in the seventh grade boys race, but the Chiefs followed in second through fourth with Zach Fullenkamp as the runner-up in 12:45. Trailing him were Zane Shreve (13:00), Austin Muhlenkamp (13:15), Chaz Carroll (13:20) and Alex Dunn (eighth - 13:33).

DUNKIRK - The West Jay Middle School volleyball teams stumbled Thursday to a pair of losses against visiting Winchester Driver. The eighth graders forced a third game only to lose 25-4, 21-25, 15-11, and the seventh grade team fell 25-23, 25-14.

Krisha Barber scored all of her team-high six points for the eighth grade team in the second game. Shannon Springer added four points.
