Starfires sweep singles matches

South Adams roundup

BERNE — A singles sweep lifted the South Adams High School boys tennis team to a 3-2 victory Tuesday over the visiting Blackford Bruins.
Scott Hoeppner cruised to victory for the Starfires (5-2) at No. 3 singles, defeating Bailey Landis 6-1, 6-0. Alex Huber knocked off Evan Baughey 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Mark Muselman sealed the SAHS win in a tiebreaker at No. 2 singles as he defeated Chase Twidell 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).
Derek Schwartz and Reid Zurcher fell 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles, and Kegan Sprunger and Ian Frank lost  6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.
South Adams won 3-1 in junior varsity action with wins from Brayden Myers, Jared Rife and the team of Jon Steffen and Landon Lehman.

Raiders top golfers
GENEVA — The top golfer for the Wayne Trace Raiders gave her team a nine-stroke advantage as it handed the host Starfires a 200-222 loss Tuesday.
Abbie Fisher totaled four bogeys for South Adams to lead the team with a 50. But Kacee Hackenberry of the Raiders shot 41, and had three teammates all at 54 or better.
Kristen Lehman opened with a par at Golf Club of the Limberlost and tuned in the No. 2 score for the Starfires with a 53. Sam Schwartz shot 58, and Kristal All came in at 61.


MS gridders fall
PONETO — South Adams’ seventh and eighth grade football teams were held scoreless Tuesday as they fell 19-0 and 25-0 respectively to the host Southern Wells Raiders.
Isaiah Amstutz had 37 rushing yards to lead the eighth grade team in its season opener. Kane Sumner totaled five tackles.
Justin Nussbaum ran for 12 yards and completed three passes for the seventh graders. Spencer Niece and Matt Hilton each finished with eight tackles.

Champions crowned
GENEVA — Stan Minnich walked away with the top prize as Golf Club of the Limberlost held its club championship Aug. 28 and 29.
Minnich won the men’s championship, finishing ahead of runners-up Rob Green and Ron Sprunger. Lindsey Eaton took the ladies’ championship with Amber Melick in second place, and Jack Hankins was the senior champion ahead of Randy LeMaster.[[In-content Ad]]
