Starfires take 1st in Meyer tourney

Local roundup

BERNE — It’s been 12 years since the South Adams High School girls basketball team won 10 games in a season.
It’s been even longer since the team had at least a .500 record.
The Starfires scored a school-record 79 points Saturday while limiting Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian to just 27 points.
The victory not only gave South Adams back-to-back Amy Meyer Tournament championships, but it was also the 10th win of the season and ensured the Starfires will finish the season .500 or better.
South Adams (10-3) beat Seton Catholic in the first semifinal 68-22, with all five starters scoring in double digits.
Senior Dzejna Ahmetovic led the Starfire offense with 36 total points, scoring 16 points against Seton Catholic and 22 against Blackhawk Christian.
Classmate Alyssa Bluhm had a game-high 23 points in the championship to go with her 13 points in the earlier game, and Sydney Willis chipped in 33 points (16 and 17 respectively) for the tournament.

Star boys struggle
MODOC — The South Adams boys basketball team dropped its fifth straight game Saturday, falling to Union 61-40.
The Starfires trailed 24-21 at halftime, but the Rockets exploded for 23 points in the third quarter as three players scored in double figures.
South Adams shot just 15 percent from behind the 3-point line, and was 4-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Chandler Ingle and Derek Wanner led the Starfire scoring with nine points each, and Jared Grabau contributed eight points and two assists.
Nick Glaser paved the way for the Rocket offense, dropping 17 points, with Spencer Shore and Michael Jackson adding 12.[[In-content Ad]]
