Starfires take ACAC tourney

The No. 19 South Adams High School wrestling team backed up its regular-season prowess with an Adams County Athletic Conference Tournament title Saturday.
The undefeated Starfires scored 221.5 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Garrrett (190.5). Adams Central was third in the eight-team field with 190.5.
Josh Ehr, who is ranked second in the state at 152 pounds, bumped up to 160 for the conference tournament and stayed perfect on the year with a 3-2 victory over Cody Conrad of Heritage in the championship match. Todd Batt took the 125-pound title by defeating Bluffton’s Philip Gerber 10-7, and T.J. Burnfield won the 145-pound crown with a 9-4 decision over Zeke Shultz of Adams Central.
Maverick Morningstar (HWT), a freshman, reached the finals and finished as the runner-up after an 11-0 loss to Heritage’s Josh Mitchell.
Eric Pimental (119), Gabe Sprunger (140), Jordan Landers (152), Adam Hofstetter (171) and Issac Werst (189) all finished third for SAHS.

SA girls drop 13th
WOODBURN — South Adams’ girls basketball team dropped its second straight matchup against the host Woodlan Warriors and 13th in a row overall 53-21 Saturday.
The Starfires (1-13), who fell 45-18 to Woodlan in the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament Jan. 12, trailed 15-4 after the opening quarter. Katrina Hawkins led them with nine points and six rebounds. Taylor Farlow grabbed seven boards, and Lyndsey Chandler finished with five points.
Lydia Yoder and Burgundy Price each tallied nine points for Woodlan. Taylor Carver added eight.


Chiefs win titles
East Jay Middle School’s girls basketball teams walked away with both titles Saturday as they hosted the East Jay Invitational.
The eighth grade team defeated Monroe Central 38-19 in the opening round and then topped Yorktown 27-19 in the championship game. The seventh graders took on the same pair of teams, winning 24-20 in the opener and 32-21 in the championship.
Breanne McIntire and Malarie Houck each had eight points in leading the Chief eighth graders (12-1) to the title. McIntire also had 12 points against Monroe Central.
Gabby Hart powered the EJMS seventh grade squad (11-2) against Yorktown with 15 points. She also had 12 points against Monroe Central, and Ava Kunkler added eight.

EJ wrestlers roll
The East Jay wrestling team rolled to a 60-34 victory Thursday over Adams Central.
Chris Pfiefer (SHWT), Logan Antrim (HWT), Andy Kohler (175), Colten Compton (80) and Mitchel Bruggeman all had pins as the Chiefs racked up 11 in the win. Also recording pins were Alex Abbott (100), Michael Williamson (160), Matt Blackford (110), Hunter Gillette (152), Luke Rowles (115) and Kaleb Toland (145).[[In-content Ad]]
