Starfires take fourth in a row (02/09/07)

BERNE - South Adams won its fourth straight Thursday night, using strong starts to each half for a 62-49 win over the Blackford Bruins.

The Starfire boys basketball team built a seven-point lead after the opening quarter and was up 29-21 at halftime. It outscored the Bruins 22-11 in the third quarter to pull away.

Andrew Caffee led the third-quarter dominance for the Starfires with seven points. Jordan Sharp had all of his six points in the third quarter, and Daniel Bollenbacher also scored six in the period.

Caffee and Bollenbacher shared the South Adams team high of 14 points as the team improved to 8-6. Ethan Sharp scored all of his 12 points in the opening half.

Chad Hildebrandt scored 11 points for the Bruins. The loss was the sixth straight for Blackford, which dropped to 5-13.

Fennig leads Jay win

OSSIAN - Neal Fennig took part in all four Jay County victories Thursday as the middle school boys swim team finished in first place at the Norwell Invitational.

Jay County, boosted by a couple of first-place relay efforts, scored 242 points.

Indians Springs finished second in the seven team event with 216 points, the host Knights were third with 211 and South Adams (193) placed fourth.

Fennig eked out a victory in the 100-yard individual medley, edging Alex Toetz of Bluffton by nine hundredths of a second in 1-minute, 9.68 seconds. He dominated the 100 backstroke, winning by just over 14 seconds with a time of 1:12.97.

He also teamed with Richard Osterholt, Luke Holcomb and Wiley Young to win the 200 medley relay in 2:10.74 and the 200 freestyle relay in 2:01.07.

Osterhold was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle at 27.29, and Young placed third in the 200 freestyle in 2:31.55.

Caleb Wurster won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:14.96 for South Adams.

Fort boys advance

COLDWATER, Ohio - Fort Recovery's eighth grade boys basketball team got a pair of double-digit scoring efforts as it advanced through the first round of the Midwest Athletic Conference tournament with a 46-32 win over the Parkway Panthers.

Nate Bihn scored 16 points to lead the Tribe, which will play Minster in the second round at Coldwater Saturday at 10 a.m. Craig Fortkamp finished with 14 points, and Shane Brunswick scored nine.

AC downs Eagles

DUNKIRK - The West Jay Middle School wrestling team came up with four victories Thursday in its 42-22 defeat to the Adams Central Jets.

Zach Bishop made quick work in his 145-pound match, scoring a pin in just 16 seconds. Kyle Garringer (135) got a pin in 1-minute, three seconds, and Nathan Drumm (120) finished his match in 2:21.

Drake Meska (100) scored a 14-0 major decision.[[In-content Ad]]
