Starfires third in ACAC tourney

BERNE — Sawyer Miller, L.J. Moser and Klayton Hinshaw gave the Starfires three titles Saturday. Only their rival to the north had more.
South Adams High School’s wrestling team scored 202 points Saturday to finish behind champion Adams Central (242) and Leo (202) in the Allen County Athletic Conference Tournament. Adams Central took eight individual titles, and Leo match the Starfires with three.
Miller (113), who finished fourth in the state at 106 pounds last season, dominated Andy Oliver of Adams Central in his championship match as he won with a 21-6 technical fall. Moser (120), scored an 11-3 major decision of Woodlan’s Shaun Snyder in the finals, and Hinshaw (170) beat David Hepler of Leo by a 12-1 major decision in his championship match.
Eric Pimentel (126), Shea Pyle (160), Mavrick Morningstar (220) and Mason Morningstar (HWT) all finish as tournament runners-up for the Starfires.
Boaz Marbach (138) placed fourth.

Starfire girls fall
WOODBURN — The South Adams girls basketball team suffered its 10th loss of the season Saturday, 46-37 to the host Woodlan Warriors.
The Starfires (6-10, 1-5 Allen County Athletic Conference) used a strong third quarter to close a nine-point halftime deficit to 35-32. But they struggled to score in the third period as they dropped their third in a row.
Alyssa Bluhm turned in a game-high 17 points to lead SAHS against the Warriors (9-6, 5-1 ACAC). Dzejna Ahmetovic also reached double figures with 10 points.
Haley Hostetler totaled 13 points to lead Woodlan. Jaryn Malfait added 11 points, and Lauren Ehle scored 10.
South Adams dropped the junior varsity game 27-11.

WJMS 7th wins title

MONROE — West Jay Middle School’s seventh grade boys basketball team fought off a couple of Adams County foes Saturday to win the Adams Central Invitational.
The Eagles edged the host Flying Jets 23-22 in the semifinal round and then defeated South Adams 36-28 in the championship game.
The WJMS eighth grade squad dropped the title game 41-34 to South Adams after beating Adams Central 37-30 in the semifinals.
Cole Stigleman and Connor Davis led the West Jay seventh graders (13-2) to the championship with 15 and 14 points respectively in the championship game. Davis scored eight points against Adams Central, and Max Moser added six.
Dakota Grove and Spencer Calvert each had nine points for the Eagle eighth grade team in its win over Adams Central. Donald Carty scored 12 points in the championship loss to South Adams.

East Jay 8th rallies
The East Jay Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team dominated the second half of its championship game at Saturday’s East Jay Invitational to defeat the Yorktown Tigers 37-27. The Chiefs topped Selma 25-22 in the semifinal round.
East Jay’s seventh graders dropped their opening game 28-24 to Selma before bouncing back to beat Yorktown 28-19 in the consolation game.
Taylor Homan racked up 22 points to lead the EJMS eighth graders in the championship game, in which they outscored Yorktown 20-9 in the second half. She had 12 points in the semifinal game. Britlyn Dues added seven.
Betsy Muhlenkamp, Katie Beougher and Taylor Muhlenkamp scored eight points apiece in the seventh grade team’s win over Yorktown. Taylor Muhlenkamp had 11 points in the loss to Selma.[[In-content Ad]]
