Starfires win 3rd straight (02/04/2009)

BERNE - The Starfires finished the first half with six points. And they won.

Despite the low scoring output, the South Adams High School girls basketball team trailed by just five points at halftime. They pulled to within two in the third quarter, and then put up 16 in the fourth to knock off the visiting Churubusco Eagles.

Ashton Morgan scored 12 points to lead the Starfires (7-10), who have now won three in a row. SAHS had not won three straight games since the 2002-03 season, and their seven wins are also the most in the last six years.

Karen Bollenbacher joined Morgan in double figures with 12 points. Jaci Liechty added six.

Lyndsey Chandler scored seven points as South Adams lost the junior varsity game 34-11.

WJMS wrestlers roll

UNION CITY - Dylan Harris won the 145-pound match in just 10 seconds to lead the West Jay Middle School wrestling team to a 52-29 victory over host Westside.

Lucas Wiemer (135) and Justin Love (125) finished their matches in less than 20 seconds, and Carrolton Fischer (120), Kris Clevenger (175) and Daniel Ring (HWT) all added pins in less than one minute. Raistlin Rice (105) also won by pin, and Chase Louck (115) took a 15-5 major decision.

Bryce Bantz, Brett Rowles and Donnie Cosner scored pins in junior varsity action.

Fort 8th wins again

FORT RECOVERY - With a 31-21 win Tuesday over St. Henry the Fort Recovery Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team improved to 9-1. The seventh grade Indians lost, 14-10.

Chelsea Pottkotter tallied nine points to lead the Tribe eighth graders. Janelle Schwieterman and Rachel Rammel each added six points.

Kelsee Ontrop and Lexi Schmitz each scored four points for the seventh grade team (2-8).

Chiefs crush Delta

The East Jay Middle School wrestling team defeated Monroe Central 67-19 Tuesday.

Lucas Boyer (HWT) and Steven Strohl (120) scored the fastest pins for the Chiefs in 1-minute, 21 seconds and 1:22 respectively. Skyler Sibery (85) and Kyle Garringer (175) also recorded pins.

Braden Smith-Lykins (95) won by a major decision, and Conner Ray (80) won by decision.

Eric Hemmelgarn scored a pin in junior varsity action.

East Jay also defeated Blackford 84-6 Jan. 27 with Boyer winning in 12 seconds.

Schoenlein, Murrell lead

INDIANAPOLIS - Alexis Murrell and Lizzy Schoenlein each won events Jan. 24 as athletes from Gym City Gymnastics competed at the Judges Cup.

Murrell finished as the all-around champion in the prep optionals with a score of 35.325. She was first on both the floor exercise (9.225) and the vault (8.75).

Schoenlein won three events with a high score of 9.325 on the floor. She had a 9.175 on the vault and an 8.65 on the balance beam as she finished second in the Level 7 all-around at 35.11.

Peyton Wilson scored a 32.15 all-around in Level 5 to qualify for the state meet. Other top scores came from Katie Snyder (vault - 9.275), Korinna Schindler (floor - 9.25) and Halle Hill (vault - 9.1, floor - 9.025).[[In-content Ad]]
