Starfires win fifth in a row (09/14/07)

BERNE - Keystone did nothing to slow the Starfires' streak.

The South Adams High School boys soccer team crushed the visiting Crusaders Thursday, earning their fifth straight win by an 8-1 final.

Adam McLaughlin scored three of the Starfires' seven first-half goals as the team continued its hot streak after taking two losses and two ties in its first four games of the year. He put SAHS (5-2-2) on the board with a penalty kick before adding two more unassisted goals and an assist.

Travis Lavy had two goals and an assist, and Zack Sharp added one goal and one assist for the Starfires. Blake Bauman also scored in the first half, and Shawn Osborne had the lone goal in the second half.

Tyler Sprunger recorded two saves in 70 minutes before turning the goal-keeping duties over to Tyler Trowbridge to complete the shutout.

Ingle wins tiebreak

BERNE - Chase Ingle was the bright spot Thursday as he picked up the Starfire boys tennis team's lone victory in a 4-1 loss to the visiting Bluffton Tigers.

Ingle dropped his opening set at No. 2 singles to Cameron Gerber, but rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) victory. In other singles matches, Brett Wagner fell 6-0, 6-2 to Nathan Baker at No. 1, and Landon Waugh lost 6-3, 6-4 against Jon Dauterman at No. 3.

In doubles action it was Kyle Schmidt and Kegan Sprunger losing 6-1, 6-1 to Clint Baumgartner and Matt Gerber at No. 1 and Daniel Dynes and Jacob Smith dropping the No. 2 match 6-2, 6-1 to Gary Green and Drew Neuenschwander.

Reid Zurcher lost the only junior varsity match of the evening 6-1, 6-0 to Mark Vanderkolk.

Girls soccer falls

FORT WAYNE - The seven-game win streak for the South Adams girls soccer team came to a halt Thursday with a 3-0 loss to the Fort Wayne South Side Archers.

Madison Warran put South Side in control with a pair of goals in the opening half. Jazmine Rosemond scored midway through the second half for the final margin.

The Starfires (7-2) had just five shots on goal compared to 13 for the Archers.

Spikers lose in three

MONROEVILLE - South Adams' volleyball team suffered another three-game loss Thursday night, falling to the Allen County Athletic Conference foe Heritage Patriots 25-17, 25-8, 15-18.

Karen Bollenbacher had four kills and one block to lead the Starfires. Andrea Moser totaled six digs and two kills, Jacie Yoder had seven assists and an ace and Maranda Potts notched five digs.

South Adams dropped the junior varsity match 25-4, 25-16 to the Patriots.

Golfers lose a pair

MARION - The Starfire girls golfers finished last in three-team action at Marion Elks Country Club Thursday with a score of 270. The host Mississinewa Indians cruised to victory at 202, and Eastern was second with a 263.

South Adams had no scores in the 40s or 50s as Tricia Crider paced the team with a 63. Kara Lehman followed at 66, Alyssa Neuenschwander shot 67 and Grace Dobler totaled a 74.[[In-content Ad]]
