MONROE — The Starfires’ title defense came up short.
L.J. Moser picked up the only title for the South Adams High School wrestling team Saturday as it finished second to host Adams Central in the Allen County Athletic Conference Tournament.
SAHS scored 189.5 points to finish 41 behind the champion Jets. Leo was third in the eight-team field with 174 points.
Moser, who is 34-1 and ranked 10th in the state, won the 113-pound championship for the Starfires when he pinned Woodlan’s Jay Knepp in 2 minutes, 32 seconds.
South Adams had two other finalists, with No. 9 Sawyer Miller (106) suffering just his second loss of the year 4-0 to eighth-ranked Hayden Lee of Garrett. Klayton Hinshaw (195) also finished second, dropping an 11-3 major decision to Garrett’s Austin Gibson.
Adding third-place finishes were Eric Pimentel (120), Boaz Marbach (126), Todd Batt (138) and Charlie Hirschy (145).

Starfire girls fall
BERNE — The South Adams girls basketball team suffered its fourth straight loss, and second in a row to the Woodlan Warriors, 42-34 on Saturday.
The Starfires (3-13), who lost to Woodlan 58-41 in the Allen County Athletic Conference tournament on Jan. 10, led by five after the opening quarter. However, the Warriors (10-6) grabbed a two-point halftime lead and pulled away for the win in the fourth quarter.
Dzejna Ahmetovic was the only SAHS player in double figures as she scored 10 points. She grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double, and also swatted six shots.
Lyndsey Chandler and Kristen Muselman each added five points. Alaina Johnston and Sharon Balsiger grabbed five rebounds apiece.
In the junior varsity game, Madison Graber scored 10 points in a 22-19 defeat.

SA boys lose
GARRETT — Long-distance shooting doomed the Starfire boys basketball team Friday in a 62-44 loss to the Garrett Railroaders.
South Adams (4-9) struggled from long distance, finishing just 1-of-9 for 11 percent, while the Railroaders buried eight 3-pointers.
Blake Fox had 15 points and five rebounds for the Starfires. Dustin Wanner added 10 points, and Matt Alig chipped in five.
Mark Smith grabbed eight rebounds.
Logan Casselman led the long-distance barrage for Garrett (6-6), shooting 5-of-6 from 3-point range and scoring a game-high 20 points. Drake Landes added 18 points, and Brandon Porter scored 10.
Chiefs win tourney
The East Jay Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team won the tournament title Saturday as they hosted the East Jay Invitational.
The Chiefs earned the championship with victories of 26-17 over Yorktown and 22-16 over Monroe Central.
Gabby Hart powered East Jay with eight points against Yorktown.
Lyla Muhlenkamp and Cheyenne Loy added six points apiece.
Muhlenkamp paced the Chiefs in the win over Monroe Central as she scored six points. Loy notched four points and seven rebounds.

EJ boys fall
BERNE — East Jay’s eighth grade boys basketball team lost a heartbreaker Thursday, falling 45-44 to host South Adams in double overtime. The seventh grade Chiefs fell 26-23.
Bryce Hensley had 17 points for the EJMS eighth graders (4-11), who lost when South Adams hit a 3-pointer as time ran out in the second overtime. Kyler Carvel was close behind with 16 points.
Ryan Burkett had eight points as the East Jay seventh grade team slipped to 10-3.[[In-content Ad]]
