Through three innings, Chandler Ingle and Kyle Selvey were locked in a pitchers’ duel. Then the Starfire bats came alive.
South Adams High School’s baseball team scored four times in the fourth inning Tuesday and six in the fifth to hand the host Jay County Patriots an 11-1, five-inning defeat.
Blake Fox and Jared Rife each hit home runs to lead the offensive outburst for the Starfires (14-11). Fox also had a double as he finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs. Rife drove in two runs, Eric Pimentel and Ingle each had two hits, and Corey Seffernick and Collin Affolder added two runs apiece.
Ingle earned the win, allowing one run on six hits in five innings while striking out four. Kyle Selvey suffered the loss for the Patriots as he gave up five runs on five hits and five walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Landry Inman doubled and drove in Keenan James with the lone run for JCHS (12-11). Alex Dunn had a pair of hits.

Patriots blank Bears
Larissa Boles tossed a three-hit shutout Tuesday as the Jay County softball team knocked off the visiting Monroe Central Golden Bears 2-0.
Boles struck out 11 batters on the way to picking up her seventh win of the year for the Patriots (12-10). She gave up just two walks along with the three hits.
The loss dropped Monroe Central to 15-6.
Boles also led the JCHS offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Chelsea Tighe had a double and a run, Courtney Finnerty went 2-for-3 and Rachelle Jackson scored once.
Jay County tallied single runs in the third and fifth innings en route to the victory. It will play its final home game Thursday against Northeastern before closing the regular season Friday at Richmond.

JC falls to Tigers
Jay County’s girls tennis team didn’t get the kind of sectional tune-up it was hoping for, falling 5-0 to the visiting Alexandria Tigers on Tuesday in its final match of the regular season.
The Patriots (3-11), who will open sectional play against Winchester at 5 p.m. today at JCHS, won just seven total games in its loss to Alexandria.

Faith Parr and Emily Westgerdes won three of those at No. 2 doubles, where they fell 6-1, 6-2 to Shanna Kelly and Danielle Maynard. In the No. 1 doubles match, Sydney Bost and Shawna Miller suffered a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Allie Hueston and Abbie Miller.
Miranda Reinhart fell 6-0, 6-1 to Sarah Kate Brenner at N. 1 singles, and Avery Loyd lost 6-1, 6-0 to Abby Matthew at No. 2 singles.
Brooke Fraley suffered a shutout loss in her No. 3 singles match against Hannah Libler.
Jay County dropped the junior varsity match 5-1 with the lone win coming from Kyra Braun at No. 2 singles.
Jay blasts Bluffton
BLUFFTON — The Jay County junior varsity baseball team scored at least once in every inning Tuesday, clobbering the Bluffton Tigers 20-6 in six innings.
Lucas Hendee and Lance Ferguson led the Patriots (8-12), who scored eight times in the sixth inning to end the game early. Hendee had a pair of doubles, four RBIs and three runs, and Ferguson notched two hits, five RBIs and three runs.
Kyler Carvel doubled and scored five times, and Chandler Woodward had two hits.
Mitchell Kunkler tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory. He gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out five batters.
Austin Beasley pitched one scoreless inning of relief.
Daniels lifts REMC
Ava Daniels delivered just as she had the entire game Tuesday, smacking a walk-off single in the fifth inning to drive in Renna Schwieterman with the game-winning run in Jay County REMC’s 8-7 victory over Brewster Electric in the Portland Junior League Rookie softball season opener. In Tuesday’s other game, First Merchants Bank defeated Portland Optimist 6-3.
Daniels singled in all five of her at bats for REMC, scoring twice and delivering the game-winning RBI. Destiny McManus and Schwieterman each had four hits, two runs and an RBI. Zoey Romine led First Merchants to its win with a single, a double, three RBIs and a run.
Emily Byrum had two hits, a run and an RBI for Optimist. Maddy Wenk notched four hits and two RBIs for Brewster.[[In-content Ad]]
