Stars drop 19th in a row (12/20/04)

BERNE — The Starfires are getting closer. But, their first win still eluded them Saturday night.

The South Adams boys basketball team lost for the 19th straight game, a school record, dropping a 55-49 decision to the Southern Wells Raiders.

The defeat dropped the Starfires to 0-7 on the year and 0-3 in the Allen County Athletic Conference. Southern Wells is 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the ACAC.

South Adams has been in most of its games this year at halftime. They stayed with the Raiders almost until the end as the teams were tied after three quarters.

However, Southern Wells posted 18 points in the final period for the victory.

Grant Moser led the Starfires with 18 points, 10 of which came in the third quarter. Justin Caffee also reached double figures with 10.

Brandon Liechty had nine points, and Corey LeMaster added seven.

Pats sixth at CV

CONNERSVILLE — Jay County’s girls swim team placed sixth at the seven-team Connersville Invitational, finishing ahead of Oldenburg Academy with 168 points.

East Central won the competition with 509.5 points, and South Dearborn was a distant second with 380.5. Results of the boys competition were not available at press time.

The top finishes for the Patriot girls came from the three relay teams, all of which placed sixth. Ashley Imel, Ashley Horn, Brittany Laux and Andrea Collins were one of those teams, finishing the 400-yard freestyle relay in a season-best time of 4:51.28.

Sandy Adkins, Julie Sours, Amber Kelly and Lindsey Vesperry were sixth in the 200-yard medley relay, and Imel, Sours, Kelly and Vesperry were sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Julie Sours posted the top individual finish for Jay County as she was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Archery league

The Jay County Conservation Club will host its indoor archery league beginning in January.

The target league will meet Tuesdays at 7 p.m., beginning Jan. 3. The bowhunter’s league will be Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. beginning Jan. 4. Shooting in both leagues will continue into March.

The cost is $3.50 per session for club members and $4.50 for non-members. The leagues are open to archers of all ages.
