Stars earn a split

South Adams roundup

BERNE - South Adams High School's softball team bounced back to earn a split Saturday, winning game two 10-5 over the visiting Norwell Knights after dropping the opener 7-5.

Katrina Hawkins powered the Starfires' offense all day, totaling four hits, including a double, five runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Karen Bollenbacher added a single, two doubles, four RBIs and a run.

Brianna Nevil added two hits, two RBIs and a run in game-two, and Tori Smith had two hits, two runs an RBI and a stolen base.

Lily Taing picked up her second win of the year for SAHS (2-3), allowing one run on four hits and two walks in four innings of relief. Hawkins took the game-one loss, giving up seven runs - four earned - on seven hits and two walks.

Tennis fifth at EN

KENDALLVILLE - Tori Kistler and the doubles pair of Sarah Muselman and Amber Neuenschwander each finished in third place Saturday to lead the South Adam girls tennis team to a fifth-place finish at the East Noble Invitational.

Kistler rolled in her wins over West Noble and New Haven 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1 respectively at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 loss against Adams Central in between. At No. 1 doubles, Neuenschwander and Muselman won their opening match 6-1, 6-2 against Wayne, lost 6-0, 6-0 to Adams Central and then bounced back for a 6-2, 1-6 (10-7) victory over New Haven.

Lindsey Graber and Kassy Potts dropped their first match at No. 2 doubles before rallying for two wins and a fifth-place finish.

Alex Fox and Kellie Howell were each 1-2, placing seventh at No. 2 and 3 singles respectively.

Baseball splits pair

STRAUGHN - The Starfires played a couple of games that came down to the final at bat Saturday, defeating the South Decatur Cougars 17-16 in 10 innings and falling 6-5 to the Lincoln Golden Eagles.

The game between South Adams and South Decatur was tied at 12 after seven innings, and both teams scored four runs in the eighth. The Starfires finally took the win in the 10th as Gabe Sprunger doubled, took third base on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice.

Sprunger had one of seven doubles in the game for the Starfires. Dustin Wanner had two doubles and a triple, Marcus Rich notched two doubles and T.J. Burnfield also had a double.

Wanner and Caleb Sprunger each had a double in the second game.

Nick Batt picked up the win over the Cougars as he at up 7 2/3 innings and struck out six batters. Caleb Sprunger took the game-two defeat, giving up the winning run on two hits and two walks in the bottom of the seventh inning.[[In-content Ad]]
