INDIANAPOLIS — The Starfires’ fourth straight win to open the season bumped them up another spot in the state poll.
The Associated Press voted the South Adams High School football team No. 5 in Class 1A in this week’s poll, which was released Monday.
The Starfires earned 138 poll points to finished 34 behind No. 4 West Central and 24 ahead of sixth-ranked Indianapolis Lutheran. They were tied for sixth with Lutheran last week.
Lafayette Central Catholic remained No. 1, with Pioneer second and Linton third.
South Adams extended its record to 4-0 Friday with a 14-7 victory over Heritage. It will host a battle of unbeatens Friday as it takes on Leo (4-0) at 7 p.m.

Heritage tops SA
BERNE — South Adams’ girls soccer team had an early 1-0 lead, but then gave up three first-half goals on the way to a 4-2 loss to the visiting Heritage Patriots.
A goal by Erika Miller staked the Starfires to a 1-0 lead, but Heritage pushed to a two-goal advantage by halftime. Alaina Johnston pulled SAHS to within one when she scored on an assist from Rachel Simon in the second half, but Heritage responded with a goal of its own for the final margin.
Morgan Haines assisted on the goal by Miller, and Brianna Nevil finished with six saves. South Adams dropped to 2-8 on the season with the loss.

Tribe golfers fall
CELINA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery boys golf team came up short Monday in a 171-180 loss to the St. Henry Redskins.
Derek Rammel led the Indians with a 39 at Mercer County Elks Golf Club.

Jared Kahlig and Gage Retz turned in matching 44s.
Hayden Pottkotter completed the team score with a 51, and Elijah Kahlig shot 53.

Star spikers lose
FORT WAYNE — After winning the opening game, the South Adams volleyball team couldn’t keep the momentum going in a 21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-14 loss to the host Blackhawk Christian Braves.
Cady Farlow led the Starfires with 12 digs, six kills, four blocks and two aces in the defeat. Chelsea Bollenbacher had 13 kills and six blocks, and Lauren Smith came up with 21 digs.
South Adams dropped the junior varsity match 25-22, 24-25, 15-11. Mackenzie Jennings had 12 digs and four aces.

Fort drops three
The Fort Recovery freshman and middle school volleyball teams suffered defeats on the road Monday.
The freshmen lost 25-8, 25-9 to the Marion Local Flyers. The eighth grade Indians suffered a 15-25, 25-11, 25-22 defeat to the Celina Bulldogs, and the seventh graders fell 21-25, 25-13, 25-18.
Rachel Pugh paced the Tribe freshman team (3-2) with three points and two assists. Emilie Sheridan scored two points.
Devin Post racked up 13 points and nine kills to lead the FRMS seventh graders. Audra Metzger and Miranda Petit each added four points.
Julie Wendel led the eighth graders with six points and five assists. Kendra Siefring racked up seven kills, and Abbie Fullenkamp had six points.[[In-content Ad]]
