BERNE — It didn’t matter if the Starfires fell behind early or jumped out to a lead. Either way, they came out on top.
South Adams High School’s baseball team trailed 3-0 to the visiting Eastbrook Panthers in Saturday’s first game before rallying for a 5-3 victory. It built a 3-0 lead in the second game en route to a 14-4, six-inning win.
Kyle Raugh had a single, two RBIs and a run in the opener, and Collin Affolder went 2-for-2 with a run. Shea Pyle finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs in the second game, and Dustin Wanner had three runs and two RBIs.
Nick Batt earned the game-one win, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out six in six innings. Alex Augsberger gave up three runs — two earned — on three hits and a walk for the game-two victory.

Boys track fourth
WAPAKONETA, Ohio — The South Adams boys track team scored 39 points Saturday to finish fourth out of 12 teams at the Wapakoneta Redskin Relays. Coldwater won with 60 points.
The Starfires were eighth out of 11 teams in the girls competition with 17 points. Ottawa-Glandorf took the title with 85.
Tim Lehman, Brody Shane, Isaac Werst and Andrew Steffen took the runner-up spot in the 4x800-meter relay in 8 minutes, 38.85 seconds. The Starfires also took second in the 4x125 relay.
The top finish for the SAHS girls team came from Aleesha Goodwin, Jenna Smith, Hannah Moore and Kristen Muselman in the 4x1,600 event in 23:44.42.
South Adams’ boys were also third in the 4x400 and 4x1,600 relays and the 800 sprint medley.

Softball drops two
NORTH MANCHESTER — The Starfires suffered a 17-1 loss to Elwood in their opening game Saturday and then fell just short 8-7 to the host Squires at the Manchester Tournament.
Alyssa Bluhm took both losses, giving up 10 runs — eight earned — on seven hits in the opener and eight runs — six earned — on eight hits in game two. Elwood scored eight times in the second inning to take control, and Manchester tallied two runs in each of the first four frames before holding off South Adams (4-8).
Lily Taing finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs in the second game, and she also had three hits in the opener. Loren Sparks had two hits, two RBIs and a run against Manchester.

Girls tennis loses
MONROE — The South Adams girls tennis team lost its matches in shutout fashion to Fort Wayne North Side and Fort Wayne South Side Saturday in a doubleheader at Adams Central.
Holly Taylor turned in the closest match of the day for the Starfires (0-8) against North Side at No. 2 doubles. She rallied to win the second set only to fall 6-2, 5-7 (10-6) in a super tiebreaker.
In the loss to South Side, the No. 1 doubles pair of Shiana Scott and Madison Kloepper fell 6-4, 6-3 to Rachel Klotz and Morgan Clarke. Megan Hreha and Faith VonGunten narrowly missed pushing their match to a third set at No. 2 doubles in a 6-2, 7-6 defeat.[[In-content Ad]]
