Stars struggle in loss to Leo (12/13/03)

The South Adams girls basketball team was never close Friday, suffering a 54-27 loss to the Leo Lions.
The Starfires (1-6, 1-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) scored just five points in the first quarter for an 11-point deficit. They never put up double digits in a period as Leo doubled them up.
Kelly Mertz was the lone South Adams player in double figures as she scored 11 points. She also shared a team-high with six rebounds.
Kindle Inniger followed with five points, six rebounds and three steals. Natalie Haines had a pair of steals.
Abby Klopfenstein scored 15 points to pace Leo. Sara Miller and Emily Williams each added nine points for the Lions.
The Starfires also lost the junior varsity contest, 36-20.
South Adams will host Norwell Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Jay freshmen win two
Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team scored a couple of victories this week, topping the Bluffton Tigers 40-18 and the Winchester Golden Falcons 45-37.
The Patriots scored 15 points in the second period for a 10-point halftime lead. They outscored the Tigers 11-1 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.
Jon Wenger finished with 12 points, and Rhett Retter scored seven.
Jay County took immediate control with a 17-3 first-quarter advantage against Winchester on the way to the eight-point win.
Retter was the lone Patriot in double figures with 11 points. Josh Selvey and Luke McClung each scored nine points.[[In-content Ad]]
