Stars survive in nine (05/05/04)

South Adams Roundup

South Adams’ baseball team built a 5-0 lead Tuesday, lost it all, and still pulled out a victory. It scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning and managed to hold the Southern Wells Raiders scoreless in the bottom of the frame for a 6-5 triumph.

The Starfires posted three runs in the first inning and two in the fourth to build their lead. However, Southern Wells put up one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings against starting pitcher Justin Caffee.

The Raiders scored twice against Caffee in the seventh to tie the game. However, Aaron Givens came in to get all three outs and shut down the rally, allowing South Adams to win it in the ninth.

Kyle Neuenschwander carried the Starfires offensively as he finished with three hits — all of which went for extra bases. He hit a home run and two doubles, driving in two runs and scoring once.

Doug Roop had two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Tyler Sprunger had two hits and two runs, and Craig Neuenschwander drove in a pair of runs.

Givens was outstanding as he got the win in relief, tossing a trio of scoreless and hitless innings. He walked three and struck out one.

Caffee gave up five runs — three earned — on seven hits in six-plus innings. He struck out six and walked three.

South Adams will host Leo Saturday at 10 a.m.

Raiders blank SA

The South Adams softball team couldn’t get anything going against the Southern Wells Raiders Tuesday in a 10-0 defeat.

The Starfires managed six hits, but couldn’t string together a rally. Southern Wells did most of its damage in a seven-run fourth inning.

Renee Neuenschwander slipped to 0-4 as she was victimized by four errors. She allowed 10 runs — one earned — on seven hits in 42/3 innings.

She struck out four and walked five.

Jennifer Rybolt had two hits, and Neuenschwander, LeeAnn Snyder, Lacy Rhoades and Candice Miller each added one.

South Adams (2-10, 1-6 Allen County Athletic Conference) will host Leo Thursday at 5 p.m.
