State tourney to begin Friday (07/23/03)

They play their final regular season game tonight, but the real action for the Portland Rockets and four other Indiana teams will starts Friday.
The American Amateur Baseball Congress state tournament returns to Portland with eight games this weekend. The top two teams in the tournament will advance to the regional level in Cincinnati next week.
The tournament opens Friday evening at Runkle-Miller Field, located at the intersection of Western Avenue and Blaine Pike, with the tournament-favorite Indianapolis Mavericks meeting the Goshen Diamondbacks at 5 p.m. The host Rockets will play in the prime-time slot, meeting the Goshen Indians at 7:30 p.m.
Play will continue Saturday beginning at 11 a.m., with the Rockets to play at either 1:30 or 4 p.m. The tournament will conclude with a couple of games Sunday, starting at noon. The championship contest is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
With the tournament looming, the Rockets had another successful weekend, although the South Bend Indians did end their 16-game winning streak.
The Indians topped Portland 12-4 in the first-game of a double-header Saturday, but the Rockets bounced back to take game two 14-10. They went on to take a pair of victories over the defending AABC state champion South Bend Senators 17-4 and 17-3 Sunday.
Pete Byrum took his first loss of the season in game one against the Indians, but Matt Ousley stayed unbeaten with the game-two victory. The key hit in the win was a three-run, seventh-inning homer from Brandon Dillon.
Portland (27-4) smacked 45 hits in supporting victorious pitchers Mike Hale and John Pettibone against the Senators. Josh Mayfield had seven hits, including a home run, in the twin bill, and Ryan Rammel and Matt Gard also went deep.
The Rockets close the regular season tonight at home against the Muncie Stars at 6:30 p.m.
JCHS golf practice
The first practice for the Jay County girls golf team will be Thursday at Portland Country Club.
There will be a practice at 9 a.m., and one at 1 p.m. All high school girls interested in joining the golf team this year should attend.
