PORTLAND — The Patriots looked like they finally had it turned around. Then they hit the wall and flopped back to the inconsistent play which has plagued them for much of the season.

Jay County allowed a 19-2 run to end the third game and the match as it lost a 25-17, 25-15, 25-19 decision to the Monroe Central Golden Bears in volleyball action Thursday.

“The kids want to, there’s not a question,” said Jay County coach Fred Medler. “In their hearts, they want to. Right now it’s not between the ears. It’s got to get there — the mental toughness, the leadership, all the things that take you to that level where if you’re up 17-6 you finish out a game.”

The Patriots (4-9) looked sloppy in losing the first two games, but played well after an extended talk between the second and third. They rolled out to leads of 8-1, 11-2 and 17-6, not allowing a single point on Monroe Central’s serve during the stretch.

But when the Golden Bears finally did serve a point, they didn’t stop.

They got the ball after a Kelly Sautbine serve went long, and proceeded to score seven more in a row with Emilee Howell behind the line. Two of those points came on aces as Howell cut the deficit to 17-14.

The Golden Bears got two points on Laura Sherrell’s serve, and then scored the final nine in a row to end it, five of which came on Jay County attack errors. They scored four points in the 19-2 run on aces, and nine more on Patriot mistakes.

The lone Jay County points came from Ashley Overla, one on a block and one on a kill.

“I’m very excited,” said Monroe Central coach Jeremy Johnson. “I have faith in them. I knew they could pull it off. I think they’re a very solid team. I hope we can just keep going with it.”

Meanwhile, the Patriots are trying everything to figure out exactly how to correct what is going wrong. Medler tried everything he could think of Thursday.

He went with the calm approach, and then the yelling and screaming approach. He called both of his time outs in the first six points of the second game. He substituted at will.

It looked for a while like something had clicked, but Jay County couldn’t stop making mistakes with the match on the line.

“It comes from playing through heat,” said Medler, whose team will play in the Noblesville tournament Saturday at 9 a.m. “It doesn’t start when you’re a senior, it doesn’t start when you’re a junior. Sometime you have got to start learning to play under pressure. The younger you do that, the better you are when you get to be a senior. We haven’t learned how to play under pressure.”

Monroe Central took a 7-1 lead in the first game, and was up 23-13 late. The Patriots managed four points in a row before the visitors closed out the game.

Game two was tied at 11 before the Golden Bears grabbed a slim 18-15 lead. From there they scored seven straight points, all on Jay County errors.

Rachel Grove paced Monroe Central with five kills, and Alicia Mangas had five blocks. Howell finished with 15 assists and four aces.

Sherrell and Grove each had six digs for a team which didn’t do much that was special, but just kept hitting the ball over the net and taking advantage of Patriot mistakes.

“One of the biggest things I emphasize is basically a lot of defense and zero errors,” said Johnson. “That’s one of my goals and that’s what they strive for every single game.”

Jay County got 11 kills, a block and two aces from Overla. Erin St. Myers finished with 11 digs and six points, including a pair of aces.

Theresa Reinhart had seven kills, Kelly Sautbine had 19 digs, Janae Roush came up with 11 digs and Miranda Tingley notched 26 assists.

Junior varsity

The Patriot junior varsity team also lost Thursday, dropping by a 25-20, 25-16 score to Monroe Central.

Jay County was up 10-7 in the first game before allowing six straight Golden Bear points to fall behind for good. It again led 4-0 and 6-1 in the second game, but Monroe Central tied the match at 11 and scored four more points behind Lynsee Shaffer to pull away.

Jessica Muhlenkamp paced the Patriots with 14 digs and two kills. Maria Miller and Shelby Rines added two kills apiece.

Ashley Horn and Rines each had two aces, Horn added three points and Sharon Dirksen finished with seven assists.[[In-content Ad]]
