Suman, Fennig lead Patriots over Blackford (05/25/07)

Each team's number one finished with the same score. But the Patriot's next two scorers did their job.

Gray Suman and Jonathan Fennig recorded matching 44s to lift the Jay County boys golf team to a 179-186 victory Thursday over the Blackford Bruins.

Adam Gray of the Patriots and Zach Ellis of Blackford shot matching 41s at Portland Golf Club to share match medalist honors.

Gray opened with three consecutive pars on the back nine at PGC as Jay County improved to 8-4 on the season. He added two more, finishing with five of the team's nine, for his 6-over-par score.

Suman also started with a par on the 348-yard, par-4 10th hole, then played bogey golf on seven of the next eight. Fennig also had one par - on the 498-yard, par-5 12th hole - as he matched Suman for the second-best score of the evening.

Justen Moser completed the Patriot team score with a 50.

Jay falls in finale

DECATUR - Better this week than next.

The Class 3A No. 7 Jay County baseball team lost its final game before heading into the sectional tournament, falling 5-4 Thursday to the host Bellmont Braves.

The Patriots (21-5) scored three times in the top of the first inning, Bellmont pulled even in the third and JCHS scored once more in the fourth to reclaim a 5-4 lead. But the Braves posted two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the victory.

Josh Ludy suffered the loss, but only one of the five runs against him was earned. He struck out eight while allowing five hits in six innings.

Ludy finished with a hit, a run and an RBI, and Tony McCowan went 2-for-3 with a run. Michael Jobe also singled and scored a run.

South Adams goes 1-1

DECATUR - The South Adams boys golf team split the difference Thursday, finishing in the middle of a three-team meet at Grey Goose Golf Course.

The Starfires finished with a 185 to put them behind Bellmont (166) and ahead of Adams Central (200).

Phil Goodwin paced the Starfires with a 42, and Mark Farris followed at 46. Ryan Moser finished with a 48, Thurman Pursley shot 49 and Jay Schwartz recorded a 50.

Wilkins selected

Jay County senior Carissa Wilkins was chosen as a North/South Senior Tennis All-Star.

She will take part in the all-star event at Five Seasons Country Club in Indianapolis Sunday, June 10.[[In-content Ad]]
