Swimmers open seasons at Ball State, Wabash (10/30/04)
Collegiate check-up
Three former Jay County swimmers had successful starts to their swimming seasons last weekend.
Abby Arnold was in on a pair of second-place finishes for the Ball State University women’s team as it defeated Illinois State 191-92. Kyle Weaver and Andrew Wells aided the Wabash College men’s team as it placed four at the North Coast Athletic Conference Relays.
Arnold, a junior, opened the 2004-05 season by finishing second in the 50-meter freestyle in 25.15 seconds. She also anchored the Cardinals’ 400-meter freestyle relay team, which finished second in 53.84.
She turned in the second fastest Ball State relay split.
She also had a couple of third-place finishes at the Red/White intrasquad meet Oct. 15.
Caleb Bye, a 2003 Jay County graduate, is also a member of the Ball State men’s team. He will begin diving for the Cardinals in January after transferring from Clemson last year.
Weaver, one of Bye’s classmates at JCHS, joined Matt Perkins, Colin Fahey and Chad Damitz for a third-place finish in the 200-meter medley relay. They finished in 1-minute, 42.55 seconds.
They were also fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:31.30.
The team of Weaver, Perkins, Damitz and Michael Hewitt added another third-place effort in the 200-yard butterfly relay in 1:40.60.
Weaver also swam in the 200-yard backstroke relay, the 500-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay.
Wells took to the pool in the 500-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard butterfly relay, the 1,500-meter freestyle relay
Another former Patriot, Caleb Dann, is also on the Wabash roster, but did not swim in the NCAC Relays.
Joscie Kaup
The 2004 Fort Recovery graduate continued her solid play for the Syracuse University women’s volleyball team as it improved to 19-5 overall and 3-1 in the Big East with a 26-30, 31-29, 30-16, 26-30, 15-12 win over St. John’s Oct. 22.
Kaup carried the defense as usual from her libero position with 14 digs. The victory ended a streak of four straight losses to the Red Storm.
The freshman raised her season total to 346 digs, an average of 3.76 per game. Her 21 aces rank her third on the team.
She also has 15 assists, four kills and one block for the Orange this year.
Scott Steiner
The senior linebacker for the Bluffton University football team kept his title as the leading tackler in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference despite a 37-20 loss to Hanover College Oct. 23.
Steiner racked up 12 tackles against Hanover, two of which went for negative yards. His 12.4 tackles per game lead the HCAC, and rank him 15th in the nation in NCAA Division III football.
Sara Hough
The Ancilla College women’s volleyball team has dropped its last two matches, but this Jay County graduate continues to be one of its best players.
Hough racked up 13 digs in her most recent match for the Chargers, a 30-22, 30-28, 30-15 loss to fifth-ranked Kellogg Community College. She also had 12 digs in a loss to John A. Colgan College.
Cameron Hummel
The 2003 Jay County graduate had another outstanding rushing day against the University of the South (Sewanee) in a 15-7 loss.
Hummel carried the ball just eight times from his starting quarterback spot, but picked up 81 yards. He finished 5-of-16 passing for 44 yards.
He is the No. 2 rusher on the team this year with 422 yards on 61 carries, an average of 6.0 yards per run. He has thrown for 576 yards and five touchdowns.

The pair of former Jay County players had just one match this week for the Anderson University women’s volleyball team, a 30-15, 30-22, 30-27 defeat to Mount St. Joseph.
Michael, the Ravens’ senior libero, finished with 13 digs. She also had one assist and one ace.
Little added three kills.
