Team-best total falls just short (08/15/06)

Local roundup

ANDERSON - Their best score in two seasons still left the Patriots one stroke short of victory.

The Jay County girls golf team posted a 199, its best total from this year and last. But the Anderson Highland Scots were one stroke better in the match-up of Olympic Athletic Conference foes.

In their first matches of the season sophomores Ivy Simons and Jennifer Hunt gave the Patriots a boost, each shooting personal-best scores. Simons finished with a 50, second-best on the team, and Hunt capped the JCHS team score with a 55.

Junior Trisha Champ led Jay County (0-2) again with a 42, one stroke behind match medalist Katie Windlan of Highland. Senior Miranda Denney shot 52, and fellow senior Ashley Bunch had a 58.

Rachael Osterholt led the JCHS junior varsity team to a score of 253 with her round of 57. Highland did not have enough players for a team score.

Tough starts for JC

The Jay County football and volleyball teams will be challenged from the get-go.

Both teams begin their seasons this week against Delta, which is ranked among the state's top 10 in both sports.

The volleyball team will play its first match Thursday at Delta, which earned the No. 2 ranking in Class 3A in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association preseason poll released Monday.

The football team will play at home against Delta a day later. The Eagle gridders were voted 10th in Class 4A in the preseason poll released by The Associated Press Monday.

Both teams have several other ranked foes on their schedules with the spikers facing Class 3A No. 5 Bellmont late in the season. The Patriots will also play Class 2A No. 4 Wapahani and No. 5 Adams Central this year.

The JCHS football team will take on the best of Class 4A when it visits top-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral Oct. 6. Muncie Central, which plays in the same sectional as both Jay County and Delta, opened at No. 9 in the Class 4A poll.

Stars start with No. 6

South Adams will also have a big challenge when it opens on the gridiron Friday night.

The Starfires start their 2006 campaign with a visit to Class 2A No. 6 Eastbrook. Adams Central, the Sept. 22 opponent for SAHS, opened the year ranked third in Class 2A.

There are also a couple of ranked teams on the schedule for the South Adams spikers - Class 2A No. 5 Adams Central and Class 3A No. 5 Bellmont.[[In-content Ad]]
