Three JC bowlers reach round of 8 (01/16/06)

Local roundup

HUNTINGTON and DECATUR — Three Jay County girls made the quarterfinals, but that was as far as any High Roller got Saturday.

Jessica Philebaum, Autumn Shepherd and Summer Roush of the Jay County High Rollers high school girls bowling team all reached the second round of the Hoosier Conference singles tournament at Huntington’s Rainbow Lanes Saturday before dropping out.

Only Cory Mock reached the top 16 for the Jay County boys, and he lost in the first round of the single-elimination tournament at the 224 Bowl in Decatur.

Philebaum had the top score in the qualifying round for the girls with a 540 series, ranking her fifth. Shepherd (8th - 535), Roush (10th - 521) and Desi Fuller (11th - 511) joined her in making the 16-bowler tournament.

Fuller dropped out in the opening round, and Philebaum, Shepherd and Roush all lost by at least 16 pins in the quarterfinals.

Mock’s 607 series placed him eighth in the boys qualifier before falling to Blackford’s Zach Ellis in the tournament’s opening round.

Williams 7th all-around

VALPARAISO — Hannah Williams was the lone Patriot to score in the top 10 in any event as the Jay County gymnastics team finished fifth at the eight-team Valparaiso Invitational Saturday.

Williams was seventh all-round with a score of 33.2, and the Patriots scored a team total of 93.45. The host Vikings, who are ranked No. 1 in the state, won with 110.275 points.

Already without the services of senior Heather Stevens thanks to a knee injury, they competed without sophomore Erika Hunt, who suffered an ankle sprain in practice Thursday.

Williams finished fifth on both the balance beam (8.925) and floor exercise (8.75). She was seventh on the vault with a 9.0

EJ grapplers 1-2

DECATUR — The East Jay Middle School wrestling team defeated Muncie Wilson 66-21 Saturday, but lost 71-24 to Bellmont and 45-43 to Fort Wayne Snider in a quadrangular meet at Bellmont Saturday.

Chandler Stout (85) and Scott Houston (135) led the Chiefs with 3-0 records. Finishing 2-1 were Matt Seagraves (80), Nick Leonhard (95), Kyle Davidson (100), Dyllan Derrickson (105) and D. J. Teeple (115).[[In-content Ad]]
