Three personal bests highlight opener (08/02/05)
JCHS girls golf
RICHMOND — After just one day of action, the Jay County girls golf team is already on the right track.
The Patriots opened the 2005 season with three personal-best scores and a 423 team total at the Richmond Invitational at Highland Lake Golf Course Monday. Complete standings from the 13-team event were not available at press time, but the JCHS team score was 28 strokes better than 2004.
Sophomore Trisha Champ paced the effort, firing a 41 on the front nine and then matching the best nine-hole score of her career with a 4-over-par 40 on the back. Her total of 81 was an improvement of 23 strokes compared to her score at Richmond last season.
Champ got off to a great start, notching pars on each of the first three holes and completing the front nine with a birdie on the 426-yard, par-5 ninth hole. She added a birdie on the 380-yard, par-5 17th, and finished with her ninth par of the day on the 18th.
Miranda Denney and Ashley Bunch destroyed their previous best nine-hole scores by five and six strokes respectively.
Denney played what coach Tom Ferguson called the “most consistent” nine holes of her career en route to a 51 on the front nine. She had all of her four bogeys on the front and finished with a 108.
Bunch did her damage on the back, where she notched all three of her bogeys for a 54. She had a 64 on the front for a 118 total.
Alissa McMillan scattered five bogeys — all on par-4s — in her round to finish two strokes in front of Bunch with a 116. That score matched Champ’s 23-stroke improvement.
Brittany Lewis, playing her first match, shot a 143.[[In-content Ad]]
