Three win titles for Patriots (01/12/2009)

MONROE - A trio of Jay County High School wrestlers won championships Saturday as the Patriots placed third at the Adams Central Invitational.

JCHS, led by Ben Theurer, Kyler Blowers and Matt James, posted 182 points at the eight-team tournament. Bishop Dwenger won with 205.5, and the host Flying Jets were the runners-up at 187.5.

There were only four pins in the championship round, and two of those came from Jay County. Blowers turned in the most impressive of those, finishing off a 3-0 day at heavyweight with championship-match pin in just 52 seconds.

Theurer completed his undefeated day with a pin in 4-minutes, 37 seconds in the 140-pound title match. James won the championship at 215 pounds with a 7-3 victory to finish 3-0 as well.

Casey Kenney (119), Cameron Pfeifer (135) and Seth Drumm (145) all finished as runners-up. Caleb Culy (130), Skylar Finnerty (152) and Zach Ainsworth (189) were each 3-1 and placed third.

Runyon first on floor

RICHMOND - Junior Nadlie Runyon won the floor exercise at Saturday's Richmond Invitational as she led the Jay County gymnastics team to a second-place finish.

The Patriots posted a team score of 94.6 in the four-team event, finishing behind the host Red Devils (98.25). Lincoln (85.475) was third, and Rushville (84.2) placed fourth.

Runyon, who was second in the all-around at 33.2, led JCHS in three out of four events.

Her win on the floor came with a score of 8.7, and she was also second on the balance beam (8.1) and third on the uneven bars (8.2).

Richmond's Meagan Vanlandingham won the other three events and was the all-around champion at 34.625.

Lexie Rowles led the Patriots with an 8.55 for fourth place on the vault, Stormi Metcalf was fourth on the bars at 7.75 and Kristen Ainsworth finished fourth on the balance beam at 7.4.

Eight win for Jay

ANDERSON - Alex Bader led a group of eight swimmers who picked up wins for the Jay County Winters Swim Team at this weekend's Anderson Aquatics Club Winter Classic.

Bader won the 50-yard butterfly, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley to earn high-point honors in the 9-10-year-old girls division. Ashley Mark added three wins as she was second in points in that age group.

Anne Vormohr and James Keen each qualified for the state meet in the 50-yard backstroke, finishing with four and two wins respectively. Cady Farlow and Sidney Sprunger added two wins apiece, and Carolina Kloepper and Caitlin Mark each won a single event.
