Tigers cruise over Jay County tankers (12/01/04)

BLUFFTON — Jay County’s swim teams managed just four wins in 24 events Tuesday as they took a couple of losses to the Bluffton Tigers.

The boys lost their opening meet of the season, 123-50. The girls team slipped to 2-2 with a 133-53 defeat.

Three of the wins for the Patriots came from the short-handed boys team, which had just seven swimmers available for the meet.

Junior Joseph Vormohr picked up the first win, edging Tanner Lesh by just 13 hundredths with a time of 29.53 seconds in the 50-meter freestyle.

Senior Derick Lee grabbed his victory in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1-minute, 10.20 seconds. Fellow senior Matt Peterson was first in the 100-meter freestyle in 1:04.65.

Dan Lautzenheiser paced Bluffton with wins in the 200- and 500-meter freestyle events.

The lone win from the Jay County girls team came in the 200-meter individual medley. Senior Julie Sours was victorious in 3:04.45.

The Patriots will return to the pool Thursday to host Olympic Athletic Conference rival Anderson Highland at 6 p.m.

High Rollers fall

Tuesday was a rough night for the Jay County High Rollers bowling teams as all three finished with losses. The boys team fell 11-9 to Bluffton, the girls team lost 19-1 to Huntington North and the junior varsity team took an 11-9 defeat against Marion.

The boys team (5-2) was up 9-1 after winning the first game 931-857. But, they dropped every point in the second game as they fell 971-832.

Cody Wright led Jay County with a 426 series. Cory Mock rolled a 369, and Andy Hughes followed with a 361.

The High Rollers lost games 964-810 and 878-713 in girls action. Summer Roush rolled a 374 series, and Autumn Shepherd had a 335.

The junior varsity team jumped out to an 8-2 lead thanks to an 873-858 game-one win, but dropped all but one point in the second game. It was led by Cody Scott with a 383.

Fort girls roll

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery junior high girls basketball teams each opened with wins over the Parkway Panthers Tuesday. The eighth graders picked up a 32-25 victory and the seventh grade team clobbered Parkway for a 32-12 win.

The eighth grade Indians were up 14-8 at halftime, and remained ahead by four heading into the final period. They put up their best scoring output — 13 points — in the fourth quarter to claim the victory.

Joanna Snyder paced the Tribe with 12 points.

Anne Koesters and Kinsey Wenning each added six.

The seventh grade team rolled to its victory behind eight points each from Nicole Pottkotter and Kelsey Brockman. Chelsey Leuthold scored six points.

Tribe boys split

ROCKFORD, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s seventh grade boys basketball team cruised past the Parkway Panthers Tuesday 39-11. The eighth grade team got off to a good start, but couldn’t hang on in a 38-32 defeat.

The seventh graders (1-0) jumped to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter and held Parkway scoreless in the second.

Greg Kahlig was the lone player in double figures as he scored 10 points. Josh Wendel was right behind him with nine points and Craig Tobe added seven.

The Indian eighth grade team was ahead 12-5 after the first period. But, it got outscored in each of the final three quarters, including 13-6 in the fourth, in the loss.

Tyler Jutte led Fort Recovery with 10 points. Wes Kahlig scored seven, and Frank Thien added five.

Tickets to Fort Recovery’s boys basketball game at home Saturday against Tri-Village will go on sale Thursday.

They will be available in the high school office Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. They will also be sold in the middle school office Friday from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

Advance tickets are $4 for students and $5 for adults. All tickets at the door will be $5.[[In-content Ad]]
