Jay County’s girls swim team stayed close much of the way, but got wins from just two swimmers in a 102-84 loss to the Bluffton Tigers Tuesday. The boys team also fell to Bluffton in its season opener, 114-71.

“We knew in order to win tonight there was no margin for error,” said Patriot girls coach Bev Arnold, whose team slipped to 3-1 with its first defeat. “We were out-touched a few times that we needed to do the out-touching. ... The girls put forth a great effort tonight. We just came up a little short on the final team score.”

Senior Lindsey Vesperry and freshman Cori Vormohr posted the only wins for either Jay County team on the night.

Each of Vesperry’s wins came by less than five tenths of a second as she had a strong night in the sprints. She edged Kristyn Speck in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.92 seconds, and was first ahead of Jessika Meyer in the 100 freestyle in 1-minute, 2.30 seconds.

Vormohr swam four of the final five events on the evening, getting victories in three of them. Each of her individual wins came in career-record times.

She was first in the 500 freestyle by more than 45 seconds, reaching the wall in 5:51.37. She also dominated the 100 breaststroke, winning by nearly five seconds in 1:14.60.

Vormohr and Vesperry also teamed with Briann Saxman and Ivy Simons to finish first in the 400 freestyle relay. They posted a season-best time of 4-minutes, 28.10 seconds.

Jay County’s boys team kept the score relatively close despite going without a victory.

Scott Walker came closest to earning a win in the 200-yard freestyle as he fought in a tight battle for the top spot with Bluffton’s Jeremy Heckel and Adam Karwoski.

The three all reached the wall in a span of 1.5 seconds, with Walker in second place at 2:13.72.

Other second-place efforts for the Patriots came from Lance VanSkyock in the 100 breaststroke, Tom McCord in the 200 individual medley, Chance Milligan in the 50 freestyle and Todd McCowan in diving.[[In-content Ad]]
