There was no great outburst, no rollicking celebration for a victory over a top-ranked team. It would have taken a close game to justify such a reaction.
In fact, except for a chant of “over-rated” from a small portion of the student section during the final minute, there was hardly a sign this was anything more than a run-of-the-mill, early-season game.
Behind 21 points from Corey Comer, Jay County dominated the second half Tuesday night and was never challenged in the final period of a 54-39 win over the Class 2A No. 1 Centerville Bulldogs. But the coach and players showed little emotion, saying the game was just a small part of what they hope to accomplish.
“I think they’re all big,” said Craig Teagle of the victory, his second over a top-ranked team as the Jay County coach. “We had a goal this year to be undefeated at home. You know, that’s just step four. We have a lot of steps left.”
Teagle, whose Patriots topped Class 2A No. 1 Winchester during the 1998-99 season, watched his team choke off the Bulldog offense after trailing 24-23 midway through the third quarter.
Centerville (5-1) never scored back-to-back baskets the rest of the game as Jay County outscored the Bulldogs 31-15 over the final 12 minutes. They scored consecutive hoops just twice after a 9-0 run spanning the first and second quarters.
“They put really good pressure on the basketball,” said Centerville coach Ryan Chiddister, whose team ascended to the top ranking in Class 2A just a day earlier. “We’ve just got to be strong with the basketball when that’s the case. We knew coming into the game that that’s the style of defense they play.
“The ball pressure did give us some trouble and took us out of what we were trying to do offensively. In the first half we had good patience offensively. In the second half when we got down some we started to panic a little bit and weren’t as patient.”
The Bulldogs were a frustrated team by the end as they watched their undefeated record slip away, forced to foul in a futile attempt to close the gap. They shot just 29 percent in the second half after hitting 8-of-16 field-goal attempts (50 percent) before the intermission.
Comer led Jay County’s impressive effort in the paint, shooting 8-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line for his career-high point total. It was the team’s third straight contest against an undefeated opponent, having topped then-unbeaten South Adams Dec. 10 before losing to Class 4A No. 3 Muncie Central Friday.
“Coach told us at halftime that we needed to keep going inside and the shots outside would fall,” said Comer, who added that the team just needed to get used to playing against Centerville’s zone defense.
“I thought he played exceptional, especially on the offensive end — just attacking the basket and being smart with the basketball and being strong,” said Teagle of his junior post player. “He did a really good job.”
Teagle also praised Randy Evans, who followed Comer with 12 points, for his defensive effort against Adam Stewart. Stewart, who had been deadly from long range, managed just one 3-pointer against Evans and scored eight points.
Justin Johnson had 13 points to lead the Bulldogs.
Jordan McCaslin grabbed six rebounds.
Jay County trailed 9-2 early in the second period following a deliberate first quarter.
But it pulled even at 17 before falling behind by two on a put-back hoop by Kyle Carter with three seconds remaining in the opening half.
The Patriots pushed ahead 23-19 by scoring the first six points of the second half, then fell behind by one. They finished the third period on a 12-1 run and ran away with the game in the fourth.
Tremendous passing helped Jay County to score consistently in the lane as five players finished with two assists. John Retter had eight points along with team highs of six rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

The Patriots grabbed the lead after the opening quarter and controlled the rest of the game for a 45-33 victory over the Bulldogs.
Jay County (5-1) was up 13-5 after the opening period. It extended the lead to nine points and the half and cruised to the win.
Rhett Retter and Luke McClung each reached double figures with 15 and 10 points respectively. Adam Garringer added six points.
Centerville was led by 15 points from Alex Jones. Jordan Bentlage scored six points.[[In-content Ad]]
