Top-ranked Rockets take four on weekend (06/27/05)
Portland Rockets
PORTLAND — The Portland Rockets bounced back from a pair of losses on Monday and Tuesday, sweeping all four games at Runkle-Miller Field this weekend.
The Rockets rolled to 8-1 and 6-0 victories over the Plymouth Red Sox Saturday.
They defeated Crumback Symons twice Sunday, 9-1 and 8-7.
The final game of the weekend was the thriller as Portland gave away all of a 6-0 lead and trailed 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
But the Rocket rally came rolling along after Lenny Koesters beat out an infield single.
Kyle Dygert knocked a two-out single to left field to tie the game, and Luther Selby brought home the game-winning run with a single to right.
South Adams graduate Matt Ousley picked up the win in his first relief appearance in five years despite allowing the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh.
Pete Byrum, a Jay County graduate, controlled the opening victory over Crumback Symons as he took to the mound for his third consecutive complete game.
Having gone a total of 19 innings in his previous two starts, Byrum needed only five as the offense backed him up Sunday.
Dygert racked up six hits on the day, JCHS graduate Mitch Waters had three in the opening game and Phil Bruns knocked three in the finale.
Chad Casey dominated the first game from the mound Saturday against Plymouth. He limited the Red Sox to just three hits while striking out nine batters.
Nick Pfeffenbarger and Phil Ernst combined on the game-two shutout. Bruns picked up five hits in Saturday’s contest, Matt Steinke had a pair of two-run doubles and Kris Steffen blasted a home run.
Portland, which was ranked No. 1 in last week’s Indiana Semi-Pro Baseball Web site’s poll, is now 20-7 overall and 8-1 in the Fort Wayne Baseball Federation.[[In-content Ad]]
