The Jay County Summer Swim Team honored its top swimmers Sunday.
After Jay County dropped its opening meet of the season, the team never lost again. It racked up 10 straight dual-meet wins to close the year, and also won the Wabash Valley Conference Relays and Saturday’s WVC Championships.
Jay County High School graduates Eme Miller and Mary Hudson, who plan to continue their careers at Defiance College and Calvin College respectively, shared the Jacqui Baxter Sportsmanship and Team Leadership Award. Luke Nichols was the Rookie of the Year, and Ryleigh Oswalt was honored with the Most Improved Swimmer Award.
Earning high-point honors for Jay County were: 8-and-younger — Mara Bader and Konner Sommers; 9-10-year-old — Eliza Bader and Mark Habegger; 11-12-year-old — Alex Bader and Alex LeMaster; 13-14-year-old — Sophie Bader, Anne Vormohr and Sok Vormohr; 15-and-older — Miller and Alex Sutton.
Huffman leads Rays
DUNKIRK — Maddox Huffman and Ian Ruiz led their teams to undefeated seasons in the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League.
Huffman racked up five on Saturday as the Sting Rays topped the Squidz 7-5 to improve to 6-0. Huffman finished the season with a league-high 57 goals.
Ruiz scored four times as his Hurricanes defeated the Lightning to go 5-0-1. The Lions also secured a first-place finish in the Wildcat Division with Sydnee Lee scoring their only goal in a 1-1 tie with the Cheetahs.
Other top scorers from the final day of action in the league were Ben Crouch with four, Malcolm McIntire with three and Sophia Shumaker, Josiah Nunly, Gabriela Bilbrey, Hunter Shumaker and Kourbin Kirby each with two.
Nichols leads Mets
REDKEY — Parker Nichols led a balanced effort as the Mets took the Redkey Junior League Minor League baseball tournament title.
Nichols was one of three Mets to go 3-for-3, finishing with a pair of doubles and three runs. Josh Dowlen and Quinn Faulkner also went 3-for-3 and each scored three runs.
Holten Hill finished 2-for-2 with three runs to power the Yankees to an 11-1 victory over the Red Sox in the Major League baseball championship game. Noah Arbuckle added two hits and three runs.
Allison Jobe powered Blue to the Minor League softball championship with three hits and two runs in an 11-8 win over the Reds. Mikele Suman and Megan Templeton each had three hits and one run.[[In-content Ad]]
