The fourth annual Community and Family Services Hoosier Hoopfest was held this weekend at Weiler-Wilson Park in Portland with eight champions crowned, including one three-time winner.

Donnie Schlosser and Doug Jackson, both of Portland, took first place in the 30-and-older division in Saturday’s competition. It was the third straight season the pair had won the title.

The teams of Keith and Mitch Waters, both of Portland, and Kerry Jellison (Portland) and Greg Brown (Redkey) won the 19-30-year-old adults division. Cassy Waters and John Retter, both of Portland took first in the 17-21-year-old co-ed division.

Winning the 10-and-younger title were Brock McFarland and Kegan Comer of Portland, and Brad Horn (Portland) and Eric Homan (Bryant) took the 11-13-year-old championship.

The Hartford City pair of Cody Quillen and Matt Nuchols was first in the 13-15-year-old division, and Kyle Smith (Bryant) and Derek Barnett (Portland) took the 14-16-year-old title.

Tourney champs

Randolph County YMCA held its 2004 Weekend in the Park tennis tournament this weekend.

Pete Mercer, Winchester, finished first in the male division, and Jessica Weigand, Winchester, took the female division championship.

Mercer was followed by Josh Hollingsworth and Kurt Fetzer, both of Richmond. Lindsey Mauger of Richmond was second among the females, and Katie McCoy of Winchester took third.

Rockets perfect in MC

The Portland Rockets traveled to Michigan City this weekend, sweeping a pair of double headers. They knocked off the South Bend Senators 1-0 and 3-0 Saturday, then topped the Michigan City Stars 3-1 in 10 innings and 14-2 Sunday.

South Adams graduate Matt Ousley and Jay County graduate Josh Jellison combined for the shutout in the first game Saturday. Matt Gard singled, stole second base and scored the lone run on a Matt Cannizzo sacrifice fly.

In game one Sunday Mike Hale struck out 10 batters in the first five innings before giving way to Kyle Heyne. Heyne did not allow a run in five innings as he got the win.

The offense came alive for the Rockets (10-4) in the second game Sunday behind starter Kurt Woeste. Tommy Pearce had three hits, including a home run, and Brandon Dillon and Brandon Cooley also went deep.

JR drops pair

The Jay-Randolph Bulldogs American Legion baseball team dropped its first two games Thursday in a double-header against Beech Grove. The Bulldogs managed just two runs in each contest, losing 9-2 and 3-2.

Beech Grove jumped in front in the first inning thanks in part to a pair of Jay-Randolph errors. The Bulldogs committed six miscues in the contest overall.

Jay County graduate Heath Williams singled and scored one of the two Jay-Randolph runs.

The Bulldogs tied the second game with a run in the third inning, but could not score again. Beech Grove scored the winning run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly.

Jay County junior Josh Atkinson took the hard-luck loss as he allowed just three runs on five hits in the complete game.

Olympic fund

Portland Mayor Bruce Hosier is developing a fund to help support Stephanie Arnold’s trip to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Arnold, a rural Portland resident and Hosier’s executive assistant, will compete in women’s archery at the games.
