Trio carries SA over Giants (11/26/2008)

BERNE - Jessica Sharp, Allison Beitler and Erika Waugh each won a pair of events and the South Adams High School girls swim team took all three relays for a 112-71 victory Tuesday over the visiting Marion Giants.

Sharp dominated the 200-yard freestyle by 11 seconds in 2-minutes, 13.2 seconds and also won the 100 butterfly in 1:10. Beitler was first in the 50 and 100 freestyle races in 27.63 and 1:01.11 respectively, and Waugh won the 500 freestyle in 5:46.8 and the backstroke in 1:06.49.

The trio teamed with Alyssa Sharp for first place in the 400 freestyle relay by nearly 23 seconds in 4:16.98. Jessica Sharp, Waugh, Jansen Yoder and Deserae Kirchhofer finished in 2:09 to win the 200 medley relay, and Beitler, Yoder, Alyssa Sharp and Jalisa Balsiger won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:57.07

Maddie Kuczora won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke for the Giants, and Emily Guarneri was first in diving.

SA grapplers roll

WOODBURN - Fresh off of winning its first invitational of the season, the South Adams wrestling team defeated the host Allen County Athletic Conference rival Woodlan Warriors 40-25 Tuesday.

The Starfires trailed after the first five matches, but got a run of four pins in five bouts to pull ahead for good.

Gabe Sprunger got the fastest of those victories, winning in 20 seconds at 112 pounds. Jim West needed just 21 seconds to win the heavyweight match.

Other pins in the run came from Jackson Werst (215) in 3:12 and Cajon Dailey (119) in 1:37. The run was followed by a forfeit win at 125 by John Striker to give South Adams control.

Chase Sprunger (152) won by an 8-0 major decision. T.J. Burnfield had a 7-3 win at 145, and Josh Ehr won the 135-poind match 15-8.

Back leads Eagles

DUNKIRK - West Jay Middle School's eighth grade boys basketball team scored a 46-27 win Tuesday over visiting Union City Westside. The Eagles seventh graders lost, 36-28.

Tyler Back racked up 17 points and six rebounds to power the WJMS eighth graders. Blake Crouch added 10 points, Jason Farmer scored eight and Chase Louck had three assists.

Kyle Selvey and Brock Farmer each had nine points for the seventh grade team. Toby McCalister added six.

WJ 7th victorious

MONTPELIER - In middle school girls basketball Tuesday, the West Jay seventh graders picked up a 34-31 victory over Montpelier. The Eagle eighth grade team lost 38-36.

Chelsea Tighe totaled 10 points to power the seventh grade Eagles. Ciera Barcus and Cierra Nichols scored eight points apiece.

Taylor Franklin finished with 15 points for the eighth graders, who got outscored 11-4 in the fourth quarter. Megan Price scored seven points, and Shelby Shirk had six.
