Trio leads Jay boys over Stars (03/09/06)

BERNE —Luke Holcomb, Neal Fennig and Richard Osterholt led the Jay County middle school boys swim team to victory over the South Adams Starfish Wednesday. Jay County’s girls lost to South Adams.

Osterholt came up with perhaps the biggest win of the night as he edged Alex Brito of the Starfish. Osterholt won the 50-yard freestyle in 30.06 seconds, with Brito just behind in 30.19.

Holcomb took care of the 100 freestyle, leading a Jay County sweep in 1-minute, 17.56 seconds. Fennig finished first in front of Holcomb in the 100 backstroke in 1:24.64.

Osterholt, Holcomb and Fennig also joined Wiley Young for the team’s lone relay victory of the night, taking the 200 freestyle in 2:15.30.

Michelle Landfair earned two of the three victories for the girls team. She was first in the 50 freestyle, nine hundredths ahead of Jansen Yoder, in 28.95. She also scored a victory by less than one second in the 100 freestyle in 1:06.61.

Michaela Long finished the 100 breaststroke in 1:23.23 for the only other win for the girls team.

Tigers down WJMS

BLUFFTON — West Jay managed just two wins Tuesday night as the Eagle wrestlers lost 31-12 to the Bluffton Tigers.

Amber McCowan (110) dominated her match with a pin in 45 seconds. Justin Ellis (135) had the other victory in 2-minutes, 20 seconds.

Sam Pitman (85), Chris Penrod (95) and Chris Mooney (145) added junior varsity wins.

XPLEX announces schedule

Portland’s XPLEX Extreme Competition Park has released its motocross schedule for the 2006 season.

The year will open with an event spanning Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30. There also be a competition on Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 7), followed by single events in June, July and August, three in September and one to end the season Saturday, Oct. 21.
