Two from EJMS 1st against Driver (09/07/06)

East Jay Middle School's boys cross country team took advantage of Driver's lack of numbers. The girls team fell just short.

In the eighth grade boys race, the Driver (Winchester) runners went one-two, but had no other teammates as the Chiefs took the team win. Driver won the girls competition, 27-28, and also defeated East Jay in the sixth and seventh grade boys race, 27-31.

Leah Wellman and Brad Leuthold picked up victories for East Jay in the girls and sixth/seventh grade boys races respectively. Wellman finished in 12-minutes, 59 seconds, and Leuthold posted a time of 12:30.

Garrett Krieg led the victory for the East Jay eighth grade boys in 12:57. He was followed by Chiefs in fourth through seventh place: Jacob Heitkamp (13:24), Blake LeMaster (14:06), Kyle Scott (14:55) and Austin Duncan (15:25).

Behind Wellman for the EJMS girls were Katie Butcher in third at 13:12, and Katie Simmons in fifth at 13:28. Laura Bowen (14:20) was ninth, and Deidre Chenoweth (14:27) placed 10th.

Following Leuthold for the sixth/seventh grade boys were Dylan Swingley (sixth - 13:46), Alex Dunn (seventh - 13:54), Jordan McBride (13:56) and Seth Ainsworth (ninth - 13:56).

Eagle girls top Blackford

West Jay's girls cross country team managed a 27-30 victory over Blackford Wednesday, but the boys team lost 20-35.

Liz Lennartz and Chance Fuller each finished third for the Eagles with times of 15-minutes, nine seconds and 13:47 respectively.

Carly Weaver and Meagan E. Price were right behind Lennartz for the West Jay girls, finishing in 15:12 and 15:14 respectively. Annie Jetmore was seventh in 16:10, and Meagan J. Price took eighth in 16:42.

Zach Johnson (16:26) and Dylan Friddle (16:34) finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth for the Eagle boys. Kyle Murdock was ninth in 20:08, and Lee Mock placed 10th in 20:30.

EJ spikers win 2 of 3

DECATUR - East Jay won the sixth and seventh grade matches against St. Joe, but dropped the eighth grade match.

The sixth graders dominated their season opening game in a 25-8, 25-18 victory. Gabie Cross led the team with eight points, Mikayla Wellman had seven and Jill Dirksen added six.

Kassie Hemmelgarn paced the 25-17, 25-20 seventh grade victory with 13 points. Maria Murphy added eight points, and Megan May scored five.

The eighth grade squad lost 25-13, 25-10. Kayla Sager had three aces in the defeat.[[In-content Ad]]
