Two Starfires honored

Two Starfires earned a state academic honor this month.
Dustin Wanner and Evan Johnston of the South Adams High School football team were named to the Indiana Football Coaches Association Academic All-State team.
Wanner and Johnston helped the Starfires to a 10-2 record as they reached the sectional championship game for the second straight season. Both also earned All-Allen County Athletic Conference academic honors in December.
In addition to the academic awards, Wanner was also an Associated Press all-state first-team honoree at defensive back in Class 1A while also picking up all-state honorable mention as a punter. He was an All-ACAC first-team selection at quarterback.
Wanner finished the season with 46 tackles and two interceptions while averaging 39 yards per punt. He ran for 1,244 yards and 19 touchdowns, and threw for 799 yards and eight TDs.

Chiefs top Driver
WINCHESTER — East Jay Middle Schools wrestling team rolled to a 60-24 victory Monday over the host Driver Hawks.
The Chiefs racked up five wins in the 127- through 162-pound weight classes, including three by pin. Levi Hummel (147), Nick Lairson (154) and Andy Kohler (162) had pins during the run, and Henry Hemmelgarn (82) and Ivan Hemmelgarn (97) also added pins on the evening.
Matt Blackford earned a victory by a 13-4 major decision, and Tyler Leonhard (127) won by a 1-0 decision.

EJ sixth wins
The East Jay sixth grade boys basketball team clobbered St. Joe (Decatur) Monday, 30-14.
Ethan Myers powered the Chiefs, who improved to 3-1, with 12 points. Noah Hummel added five points.
The B team got 12 points from Zaaron Lee, but fell 25-22.[[In-content Ad]]
