Unbeaten Lakeview shuts out Patriots (10/08/03)

Local Roundup

Jay County’s boy soccer team played what coach Alan Bailey called its best game of the year Thursday. Still, the Patriots couldn’t knock Lakeview Christian (14-0) from the ranks of the unbeaten in a 1-0 defeat.

Jay County (9-4) held state leading scorer John Singer to just two shots in the contest, but Calen Roome picked up just enough of the slack. He connected on his only shot of the contest — a penalty kick after Scott Bruggeman was called for a hand ball — scoring what would be the game-winning goal with 15 minutes to go in the first half.

The teams played to a stand-still the rest of the game, each finishing with seven shots on goal. The Patriots also won 38 free balls to Lakeview’s 25.

Trent Bailey led the shooting effort for Jay County with two. Dave Johnston, Adam Brandt, Scott Bruggeman, Kyle Carpenter and Eduardo Nieto each added one.

Bailey allowed the game’s lone goal, taking over the position only to defend against he penalty kick. Drew Lloyd spent most of the game patrolling the net, saving all five shots against him.

The Patriots will play at home Thursday against Muncie Central at 4:30 p.m.

Patriot girls blanked

The final game of the season saw the Jay County girls soccer team suffer a 5-0 defeat against Yorktown.

The Patriots finished the year at 8-5-1. The now have 10 days off before heading to the South Adams Sectional to play the host Starfires in semifinal action Saturday, Oct. 18 at 9:30 a.m.

Yorktown go on the board midway through the first half on a Megan Buegaur direct kick from about 20 yards out. At the 15-minute mark of the first half Katie Sursa made it a 2-0 advantage, and Candace Tank punched one in from six yards out with eight minutes to go for the three-goal halftime margin.

Tank and Sursa each added a goal late in the second half, and Renae Laux’s penalty kick was saved by Yorktown’s goalie with 3:30 to go before the game was called because of darkness.

Jay County was outshot 26-12 in the game, with most of the differential coming in the first half. Sarah Miller took three shots for the Patriots, and Lindsay Friddle and Jamie Bruggeman each shot once.
