Unbeaten Wildcats dump Fort in fourth (12/12/03)

Fort basketball

The Indians simply could not stop Robyn Hoying.

Fort Recovery was right with the Minster Wildcats — rated third in the area in Division IV by the Dayton Daily News — but couldn’t sustain the effort in the final period. Thanks in part to Hoying’s powerful effort inside, Minster stayed undefeated as it pulled away for a 58-43 victory.

The Indians were deadlocked with the Wildcats at 27-27 after 16 minutes of play, and trailed by just three heading into the final period. However, the Tribe struggled to score in the final minutes of the contest, and Minster came away with an 18-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Hoying was the biggest part of the Wildcat win. She finished 10-of-11 (91 percent) from the field for a game-high 25 points.

She led Minster (3-0, 1-0 Midwest Athletic Conference) to a 55 percent mark from the field, including 61 percent in the second half.

Karen Brackman and Bridget Slonkosky each followed with 11 points. Brackman had six rebounds, and Hoying added five to lead the Wildcats to a 23-14 rebounding advantage.

Brackman and Valerie Bornhorst each had four assists.

Joscie Kaup scored 12 points, and freshman Holly Stein had 10 for the Indians (1-3, 0-1 MAC). However, the Tribe shot just 40 percent from the field and managed just six trips to the free throw line compared to 19 by Minster.

Jenn Stahl grabbed four Fort Recovery rebounds, and Kaup dished out five assists.

The next game for the Indians is at Jackson Center — ranked fifth in the DDN poll — Saturday at 1 p.m.

Junior varsity

Fort Recovery also struggled mightily to score in the junior varsity game against Minster, finishing with a 38-23 defeat.

The Tribe fell out of contention in the first quarter, scoring just two points. It finished 3-of-20 (15 percent) from the field in the first half, trailing 24-8 on the way to the 15-point loss.

Renee Evers led the Indians with seven points, and Kelsie Will and Sara Fortkamp each had four. Tiff Gaerke grabbed five rebounds, and Fortkamp had three assists.

Danae Spieles paced the Wildcats with 13 points, and Laura Morset notched seven points and two assists. Laura Gruber finished with six rebounds, and Leslie Muhlenkamp grabbed five.

Junior high girls

The Fort Recovery junior high girls teams also took on Minster Thursday, coming away with a split. The eighth graders lost a 44-19 decision, but the seventh grade team came away with a 21-18 victory.

The seventh grade Indians (2-0) used third-quarter offense and fourth-quarter defense to pick up the win. They scored 10 points in the third quarter to take a 21-15 lead, and held on despite going scoreless in the final period.

Kinsey Wenning set the pace with 11 points. Anne Koesters scored six points, and Joanna Snyder had four.

Minster scored at least eight points in every quarter of the eighth grade game to hand Fort Recovery the defeat.

Jill Pottkotter had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Val Fortkamp followed for the Tribe with four points and six rebounds.

Junior high boys

Fort Recovery’s junior high boys teams each lost to Minster Thursday with the eighth grade team losing a 40-39 heartbreaker while the seventh grade team lost 30-22.

The eighth graders (0-2) trailed by eight at the end of each of the first two quarters. They scored 13 points in the third to get back in contention, but couldn’t quite complete the comeback.

Clint Tobe finished with a team-high 20 points. Eric Lamm scored five points, and Lucas Staugler finished with four.

The seventh grade Indians slipped to 0-2 despite 14 points from Toby Metzger. Luke Knapke and Zac Schoenherr each scored three points.[[In-content Ad]]
