From the very beginning, Alan Bailey said he thought his team could be the most successful Jay County has ever seen. Throughout the season, the Patriots have proven his point.

They did so once again Monday, emphatically finishing off an undefeated regular season with a 6-0 trouncing of the Lakeview Christian Lions.

"I'm real happy. It's something you never dream of, what these kids did," said Bailey, whose team finished at 14-0-1 with the lone tie coming against Centerville. "It's unreal. They deserve it. They put the work into it. ...

"It's nice when you've got kids that understand the game real well and have that passion. It's been fun."

The Patriots fell behind in the first half of their season opener against Muncie Central, but rallied for a 4-2 victory. They never trailed in the next five games, and went on to win their first nine of the season.

Following the tie with Centerville, JCHS has won five more in a row, including shutouts of 8-0 over Muncie Southside and 6-0 over Lakeview Christian (10-6).

"It's a good year," said senior Trey Dunn after the victory over the Marion school Monday. "What else can you say about it?"

You could say Jay County was dominant over the Lions.

After giving up a few runs in the opening minutes of the game, the Patriots dominated the rest of the way. Their first two goals came in rapid succession, both from junior leading scorer Brad Horn.

Shortly after a shot from senior Isaac Poole just missed off the left post, Joe Rasmussen, a foreign exchange student from Denmark, hit a pass through the Lakeview Christian defense. Horn timed his run perfectly, sprinting past a pair of defenders and firing to the left corner for a 1-0 lead with 29:02 on the clock.

Just 42 seconds later, Horn got the ball behind the defense again, scoring inside the left post again from about 12 yards out.

The pair of goals gave Horn 22 for the season, and he added another on a beautiful assist from Poole for the final goal of the game. He ranks as one of the top 10 scorers in the state.

"He's definitely picked it up," said Bailey of Horn's hat trick.

"That's his mentality is to score. ... He and Isaac both want to put it in the back of the net and they'll do whatever it takes to put it back there."

Horn's first two goals gave the Patriots their 2-0 halftime lead, and they iced the game by scoring at six-minute intervals in the second half.

Most of the JCHS scores came in the same style as Horn's with a player flying behind the Lions' defense and beating goalie Keaton Whitehead one-on-one. Dunn opened the second half in that fashion, making a break toward the right post and firing just inside the right post to push the lead to three.

"That's our game right there, to get that nice rolling ball through and then use the speed of those guys up front," said Bailey. "They get behind the defenders and then it's them versus the keeper."

Six minutes later it was Poole's turn as he tallied his 19th score of the season. At the 17:37 mark Rasmussen took a pass from Jeremiah Cotherman, out-dueled several Lakeview Christian defenders in the 18-yard box and fired a shot inside the left post and off Whitehead's hand.

Horn scored his final goal with 10:57 left to finish off the scoring.

"We've played really well as a team," said Poole adding that he's hoping the trend continues and JCHS can bring home its first regional title this season. "The scoring has been really spread out. Trey's had a lot, Johnson's had a lot, and then me and Brad ..."

"And not only that, but the assists have come from everywhere," said Dunn, who along with fellow seniors Poole, Rasmussen, Brady Mills, David Darby, Jordan Moser, Derek Bartlett, Aaron McLaughlin and Lance Louth played the final home match of his career. "And we've got a heck of a defense behind us. Defense never gets enough credit. ... They've done a heck of a job."

The shutout of the Lions was the fourth of the season for the Jay County defense and goalie Adam Daniels. In 15 games, the Patriots have given up just 20 goals while scoring 72.

Sectional play opens Thursday when JCHS, which won its lone sectional crown in 2006, plays South Adams in the opening round at Blackford at 5:30 p.m. The host Bruins will take on Union City in the second semifinal game Thursday.

The championship game will be Saturday at 11 a.m., and the winner will play in the regional tournament at Blackford.

The Patriots defeated South Adams 7-3 during the regular season, and defeated Blackford 6-3. They did not play Union City.[[In-content Ad]]
