Unlikely run gives Indians victory

Local roundup

NEW BREMEN — An unlikely RBI was the only run the Fort Recovery baseball team needed Thursday.
With bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning, Nate Lochtefeld was hit by a pitch to bring in the game’s only run in a 1-0 victory over the New Bremen Cardinals.
The Cardinals threatened in the bottom of the seventh with runners at first and second with no outs, but a failed bunt attempt resulted in a double play and Cole Wendel induced a pop out to end the game and get the save.
Elijah Kahlig, who scored the winning run for the Indians (6-1), and Lochtefeld each had one hit.
Kent Retz got the win for the Fort Recovery, scattering four hits over six innings of work, striking out nine and walking one.

Errors dim Starfires
NEW HAVEN — The Starfires were within striking distance after two innings.
Then the errors happened.
New Haven scored 11 unearned runs on five errors as the South Adams baseball team dropped its second game in as many days, this one by way of a 14-2 thumping in five innings.
South Adams opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but the Bulldogs answered in the home half of the frame and added another in the second before their offense struck for eight in the third.
New Haven plated four more in the bottom of the fourth to complete the win.
Collin Affolder had two of the Starfires’ four hits on the day. He added two runs and an RBI.
Logan Stoner and Kenny Amstutz had the other two hits for South Adams.
Chandler Ingle took the loss, allowing 10 runs — two earned — on nine hits while striking out one and walking a pair in 2 2/3 innings of work. Dakota Scherrer gave up four runs — one earned — on one hit, and walked two.

McIntire sets record
BERNE — It took two meets for Bailey McIntire to write his name in the South Adams record books.
The freshman set a new school record in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9 minutes, 42 seconds, helping the Starfire boys track team to a second-place finish.
South Adams scored 39 points. The Adams Central Flying Jets won the three-way meet with 87 points and Garrett was third with 30.
The Starfire girls scored 69 points to edge Garrett for the win. The Railroaders had 62 points, and Adams Central was third with 24.
