MUNCIE — Jay County’s girls basketball team has a long memory. And it had a few images it wanted to erase — or at least avenge.

The Patriots managed to do so Wednesday, overcoming an inspired effort by Amanda Downing to top the Delta Eagles 57-42.

Last season the Eagles ruined Jay County’s final home game and Senior Night in a 78-42 trouncing, by far the Patriots’ worst loss of the season.

“We wanted to basically come back and (beat them) since they beat us on senior night last year,” said Patriot senior Lindsay Friddle, who was 9-of-10 from the foul line as she scored a team-leading 14 points. “We were all pumped up to beat them.”

Coach Lea Selvey agreed that last season was a big motivational factor for his squad.

He noted: “During one of the timeouts when they had pulled back I said, ‘Ladies, do you remember last year? This is their senior night. You’ve got to want it’”

The Patriots got the 15-point win this season despite an outstanding 27-point, 12-rebound effort by Amanda Downing.

The Delta senior scored 19 of her points in the second half. She tried to drag the Eagles (7-12) to a comeback, but got little help as she accounted for nearly 65 percent of her team’s offense.

Jay County (11-7) took command in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 13-3 during the first five minutes of the period. Saffron Redwine’s free throw at the 3:19 mark put the Patriots up 26-11.

But, Delta finished the half on a 7-2 run, and Downing nearly pulled them all they way back early in the fourth quarter.

After trailing 38-24, Downing scored nine of the next 11 points for the Eagles to cut the deficit to 39-35 with just under six minutes to play. However, Jay County answered by hitting nine of its next 10 free throw tries, including seven by Friddle.

Friddle led an outstanding foul-shooting effort as the Patriots went 28-for-38 for 74 percent from the line. Leah Gasparovic went 5-of-6 from the stripe, and Jamie Bruggeman, Markie Runyon and Sara Garringer each were 2-for-2.

Jay County’s ability from the line helped them overcome 28 percent field goal shooting. It also did an excellent job of taking care of the ball, finishing with just 11 turnovers compared to 20 for Delta.

“We handled (the rally),” said Selvey, whose team has won five of its last six games. “You know that’s what’s going to come. I thought the kids handled it well at the end. They made their free throws.”

Friddle was followed by Jamie Bruggeman with 11 points. Bruggeman was 0-for-4 on 2-point tries, but was perfect as she hit all three of her 3-point attempts.

Bruggeman and Friddle each finished with four assists.

Markie Runyon also reached double figures with 10 points, and just missed a double-double as she grabbed nine rebounds. Leah Gasparovic scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds, and Sarah Dirksen also had five boards.

“I think we’re playing as team,” said Runyon. “It makes it more fun. It makes it easier to play.

“We’re looking for each other, passing-wise. That lets you relax when you play because you’re not worried about making a basket just by yourself.”

Downing was practically alone as she went 10-for-17 from the field while the rest of the squad was a combined 4-of-39 (10 percent). Kelly Costello was second on the team in scoring with five points, and Kortney Gray had four.

It was an especially off night for Gray (2-of-17 overall, 0-for-12 on 3-pointers) after she torched Jay County by hitting five 3-point shots last season.

Despite the win, the Patriots inability to stop Downing inside is a problem with the sectional tournament a week away. Jay County was also dominated on the glass as Delta won the rebounding battle by a 46-31 margin.

“We’ve got to take a look at film,” said Selvey. “Basically we’re going to show them what (Downing) did to us, and show them how to take care of it. That is a big concern.”

With a first-round win, the Patriots could meet Downing, Gray and the Eagles again in the sectional semifinal round next week. The other option would be a showdown with sectional host and favorite Elwood (16-4), which sports inside threat Megan Groover (14.2 points per game) and standout guard Kyleigh Jones (15.7 ppg).

Jay County will close the regular season at Connersville Saturday at 11 a.m. Its first-round sectional game against Mississinewa will be at Elwood Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Junior varsity

Jay County’s junior varsity team lost for just the second time this season, taking a 33-22 defeat against Delta.

It was a rough-and-tumble, low-scoring game, with Delta grabbing an 11-10 lead at the half. It expanded the advantage to 19-12 in the third quarter on the way to the win.

Miranda Betz was the lone Patriot in double figures as she finished with 10 points. Chelsea DeBoy scored eight points.

Kelly Costello had eight points to lead the Eagles, who shot 33 free throws. Jay County (14-2) took just eight foul shots.

Jessica Marshall and Malorie Smith each had seven points for Delta.[[In-content Ad]]
