Vormohr breaks fly record (02/14/2009)

JCHS girls swimming

INDIANAPOLIS - One of the best swimming careers in Jay County High School history came to a close Friday night.

Cori Vormohr, who hold seven school records, finished her season by setting the bar a bit higher in one of those events. She broke her own mark in the 100-yard butterfly Friday as she finished 29th in the preliminary round of the IHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving State Finals at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

The senior also 26th in the 100 breaststroke. The top 16 swimmers in each event advanced to Saturday's championship and consolation races.

"I think she was happy with how she swam altogether," said JCHS coach Matt Slavik. "She wrapped up a great four-year career at Jay County. She's just a great leader, a hard worker. ... I'm extremely proud of how she swam."

Vormohr pulled a muscle during warm-ups, but didn't allow it to effect her in the butterfly. She turned in a career-best time of 59.89 seconds, surpassing her previous school record by nine hundredths of a second.

She is the only female swimmer in JCHS history to break the one-minute mark in an event other than the freestyle.

"The butterfly felt good," said Vormohr, who also holds school records in the breaststroke, 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 500 freestyle, 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

"I'm glad my time came down. I'm glad I finished it like that. I hadn't gone under a minute all year."

Vormohr's finish in the breaststroke came with a time of 1-minute, 9.03 seconds. She moved up three places in that event after being seeded 29th in both events.

"I'm not disappointed, but it would have been nice to have a best time," said Vormohr of her breaststroke. "I'm happy with the way I ended things. I did the best I could do."
