Vormohr breaks record at finals (02/09/08)
JCHS girls swimming
INDIANAPOLIS - It wasn't enough to earn her a spot in the top 16, but Cori Vormohr's efforts Friday night were impressive.
The Jay County junior picked up a few spots in each of her races at the IHSAA Girls Swimming State Finals, finishing 25th and 26th respectively in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100 butterfly preliminaries.
Only the top 16 swimmers in each event advance to today's finals and consolation finals.
Vormohr was the 28th seed in the breaststroke heading into the meet, and accomplished her goal of breaking her own school record. She shattered the mark she set less than a week earlier, finishing 25th in the event with a time of 1-minute, 8.66 seconds.
The previous record, which she set in winning the sectional championship Feb. 2, was 1:09.3. The final qualifying time in Friday's preliminaries was a 1:07.54 by Mackenzie Powell of Lawrence Central.
In the butterfly Vormohr fell two tenths of a second short of her school record, but it was still enough to make a jump from her seed position. She finished the race in 1:00.18, which was good enough for 26th place.
The final qualifying position went to Mount Vernon's Michea Reinitz, who posted a time of 58.52.
Sarah Miller was the last JCHS athlete to compete in the girls swimming and diving state finals, placing sixth in diving in 2004. Vormohr was the first individual swimmer to qualify since Abby Arnold competed in the 50 and 100 freestyle in 2002.[[In-content Ad]]
