Vormohr captures pair of OAC championships (05/15/06)

JCHS track

ANDERSON — Joseph Vormohr showed he’s ready for the tournament season.

Vormohr won a pair of titles for Jay County at the Olympic Athletic Conference championships Friday at Anderson Highland. The Patriots had seven victories in all as the girls team finished second and the boys third in the four-team competition.

The host Scots won the boys title with 96 points, followed by Muncie Southside (62), Jay County (57) and Connersville (28). Connersville girls ran away from the field in the girls competition with 99 points — the second-place Patriots were 40 behind — while Highland scored 55.5 and Southside had 24.5.

Vormohr had a great day, especially in the shot put. He tossed a season-best by five inches to win by nearly a foot over Highland’s Edward Gibbs at 51 feet, eight inches.

The senior dominated the discus, taking first by more than 12 feet with a throw of 136 feet, seven inches.

Jay County’s girls were led by the Johnson sisters, who each won an individual event and teamed for a first-place relay.

Alyssa Johnson powered a one-two Patriot finish in the 3,200-meter run, winning in 12-minutes, 34.7 seconds. Kylie Wellman was second in 12:52.40.

Amanda Johnson finished in front of a pair of Connersville runners in the 800 run. Her winning time was 2:32.30.

The pair also joined Jessica Mosier and Allison Fullenkamp to take first handily in the 4x800 relay. They finished in 10:22.13, more than 15 seconds ahead of second-place Connersville.

Justin Gilbert and Dexter Shreve each added individual wins on the boys side.

Despite being a relative newcomer to the event, Gilbert edged James Gibson of Highland in the 400 dash in 52.2. He ran a time of 11.8 to take second in the 100 dash.

Shreve joined Vormohr to give the Patriots a big day in the field events. He was first by four inches in the high jump at six feet, two inches, and was the long jump runner-up with a leap of 18 feet, six inches.

Brandon Reynard also posted a second-place finish with a time of 24.4 in the 200 dash.

Erika Hunt turned in the other JCHS victory. She posted by far her best career time in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 50.70.

Wellman added a second-place effort in the 1,600 run in 5:51.49, and Lindsey Current placed second in the high jump at five feet even.[[In-content Ad]]
