Vormohr, Kelly win at Connersville (12/18/06)
JCHS swimming
CONNERSVILLE - Just three Patriots managed to finish in the top three of any event Saturday at the six-team Connersville Invitational. But those efforts included three victories.
Cori Vormohr won a pair of events for the Jay County girls swim team and Steven Kelly added a title for the boys as both teams finished in fourth place overall.
The JCHS girls scored 166 points, 11 ahead of Centerville and 15 back of the host Spartans. The boys finished 14 points ahead of Columbus East with 151, and more than 50 behind third-place Connersville. East Central won both competitions with 324 and 407 points respectively.
Each of Vormohr's wins came in near-record time and in fairly dominating fashion.
She picked up her first victory in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing less than a second off her own school record time in 2-minutes, 18.4 seconds. She was nearly three seconds ahead of second-place Alex Howard of South Dearborn.
Vormohr won the 100 butterfly by nearly three seconds as well, again finishing less than a second off her own school record with a season-best time of 1:02.71. She also led the Patriots' two best relays, joining Tina Gingrasso, Briann Saxman and Michelle Landfair for third in both the 200 freestyle event (1:54.22) and the 400 freestyle (4:11.77).
Kelly pulled away to win a diving competition in which the third through fifth place divers were separated by less than 10 points after 11 dives. The sophomore outdistanced runner-up Josh Johnson of Connersville by 23 points, winning with a total of 286.35.
Junior Tom McCord turned in the only other top-three effort for Jay County in the 100 backstroke. He was third in 1:04.46, five seconds behind the East Central duo of Daniel Lyle (58.43) and Tim Dickhaus (59.72).
McCord also anchored the top relay finish for the boys, teaming with Matt Eldridge, Chance Milligan and Lance VanSkyock for fourth in the 400 freestyle event at 3:57.50.
Landfair added a fourth-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 27.87. April Acker was fifth in girls diving with 267.55 points, and Aaron Hudson placed fifth in the 100 butterfly at 1:02.05.[[In-content Ad]]
