The Jay County Summer Swim Team is back to its winning ways.

It won its third straight meet Tuesday — 657.5-522.5 over Wells Community — thanks in part to three record-breaking races from Cori Vormohr. The team opened with four consecutive wins, then lost back-to-back meets prior to its current streak.

Vormohr set three new team records, one of which was also a pool record, in the victory.

Her team- and pool-record performance came in the 13-14-year-old girls breaststroke with a time of 36.88 seconds. The previous record was held by her cousin and coach, Taylor Fullenkamp.

Vormohr snapped the record in the long freestyle by more than three seconds as she finished in 1-minute, 4.42 seconds. The previous mark of 1:07.48 was also held by Fullenkamp.

Her other record came in the butterfly in 32.11, breaking the previous record held by Abby Arnold.

Four other swimmers joined Vormohr in winning three events as Jay County took 38 of 60 events overall. It also won 13 out of 19 relays to greatly increase its margin of victory after beating Wells Community by just 14 points earlier in the year.

Cori’s sister Annie was one of the other triple-event winners as she dominated the 8-and-younger girls division. She was first in the long freestyle, backstroke and individual medley.

Sam Miller won the 13-14-year-old boys butterfly and individual medley, and Derrick Lee took the same two events in the 15-and-older division. Miller added a win in the breaststroke, and Lee took first in the short freestyle.

Lucas Holcomb also grabbed three victories, winning the 9-10-year-old boys long freestyle, butterfly and backstroke.

Taking two events apiece for Jay County were Rachel Vogler, Levi Hummel, Emilee Miller, Mary Hudson, Alysha Miller, Michelle Landfair and Aaron Hudson.

Rockets roll again

The Portland Rockets stayed hot Tuesday with a 5-2 victory over LaMargarita at Runkle-Miller Field.

The Rockets (17-5, 7-1 Fort Wayne League) trailed early, but scored three times in the fourth inning to pull ahead for good. Pete Milas, Matt Gard and Ryan Rammel each knocked RBI hits in the frame.

LaMargarita tried to rally in the fifth, but a run was cut down at the plate as Jay County graduate Mitch Waters relayed through Pete Milas to catcher Brandon Dillon.

Neil Schmitz, Kurt Woeste and South Adams graduate Matt Ousley combined to hold LaMargarita to five hits while striking out seven batters.
