JCHS swimming
Cori Vormohr is halfway home.
Vormohr broke yet another Jay County girls swimming school record Thursday, this time taking down the mark in the 100-yard breaststroke. Less than halfway through her sophomore season, she owns school records in four of the eight individual events.
Despite Vormohr's effort, the Patriot girls swim team fell 191-121 to the Anderson Highland Scots Thursday. But, the boys team made the most of its first appearance in the new JCHS pool by eking out a 150-149 win.
Vormohr's new record came in the 100-yard breaststroke, where she knocked down yet another mark previously held by her cousin Taylor Fullenkamp. She won in 1-minute, 10.76 seconds, breaking Fullenkamp's record of 1:11.60 by nearly a full second.
She also dropped her own record time in the 200 individual medley. She took the race in 2:17.84, knocking down her mark of 2:18.84 set at this year's Norwell Invitational.
Vormohr holds the JCHS records in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle as well.
Jay County's teams combined for just five wins in all, but the boys managed to pick up enough second- and third-place points to improve to 1-1 on the year. The boys lost their opener at Bluffton Tuesday by just five points.
Sophomore Steven Kelly turned in the only victory for the Patriot boys. He led a diving sweep for the second straight meet, winning with 167.05 points. Donny McCowan scored 158.95 points to finish second, and Todd McCowan took third with 150.50.
Tom McCord added a pair of second-place finishes.
McCord was the runner up in the 100 butterfly, just missing the 1-minute barrier in 1:00.21. He also finished second in the 100 backstroke at 1:02.34.
Also finishing in second place were Andres Ayesta with a time of 26.43 in the 50 freestyle, Nathan Cain at 6:16.73 in the 500 freestyle and Aaron Hudson in 1:09.46 in the 100 breaststroke.
Following Vormohr for the girls team was freshman Michelle Landfair, who set another career-best time in winning the 100 freestyle in 1:01.49. April Acker added a diving victory with 157.80 points.
Landfair posted another career-best time of 27.89 in the 50 freestyle, where she finished second.
The loss was the first of the season for the girls team, which is now 4-1. The squad opened with wins over Muncie Southside, Elwood, Adams Central and Bluffton.
The teams will visit Oak Hill Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will swim again at home Thursday against the Norwell Knights at 6 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
