Vormohr takes victory in discus (04/24/06)

JCHS roundup

MUNCIE — Saturday was good to Joseph Vormohr.

The senior, who was later crowned prom king, turned in the only Jay County victory at the Muncie Central Relays. The Patriots were seventh in the eight-team “Class A” competition with 38 points.

Huntington North finished first with 95, and Kokomo was second with 85.

Vormohr won the “Class A” discus easily, outdistancing the field by more than 10 feet. His winning toss traveled 154 feet, four inches.

He was also fourth in the shot put at 47 feet, seven inches.

Freshman Dexter Shreve had the next best individual finish for Jay County, taking third in the high jump at six feet, two inches. He was also fourth in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 10 inches.

The Patriot team of Shreve, Justin Gilbert, Brandon Reynard and Denny Gardner was third in the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle relay in 1-minute, 5.06 seconds.

Golfers finish third

GENEVA — Jay County’s boys golf team turned in by far its best 18-hole score of the season Saturday to finish third at the South Adams Invitational.

The Patriots finished with a 358 at Wabash Valley Golf Course, 21 strokes better than their previous best at the Bellmont Invitational. Norwell ran away to win with a 316, Fremont (353) was second and the host Starfires (368) placed fourth.

Adam Gray had the top score for Jay County, finishing sixth overall with an 82. Gray Suman shot 87 to place 10th.

They were followed by Josh Hall (90), Justen Moser (99) and Chris Shannon (109).

Baseball falls to Highland

ANDERSON — The Jay County baseball team was up 7-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh. But they gave up five runs, the final three coming on a walk-off homer to lose 8-7 to the Anderson Highland Scots Saturday.

All but two of Highland’s runs were unearned, including all three against losing pitcher Michael Jobe. He gave up the game winning homer as he tossed the final two-thirds of an inning.

Josh Shatto pitched the first six innings, allowing five runs — two earned — on six hits and two walks. He struck out seven.

Sophomores Jobe and Josh Ludy carried the offense for the Patriots (4-6), each finishing with two hits. Jobe had a double, a triple, two runs and three RBIs, and Ludy homered and scored twice.
